But just wanted to share this piece that I recently finished that was turned from some beautiful spalted, ambrosia maple. This one is headed off to the Greenhill Gallery to be a part of the upcoming Emerald Gala which I am very excited to be a part of! It’s nice to finally see something get finished that isn’t a spoon!
Anyways yall, I’ve got some time set aside next week just for turning and finishing some new work so hopefully no more two month breaks at least for now….
For this first blank, I had assumed it was box elder but due to the crazy mold that had built up under the plastic wrap, it was hard to fully tell. I knew I had some sweet gum and oak in this pile as well so I wasn’t 100% certain. You’d think that as a woodworker I would be able to identify woods better but truthfully that is a skill I have always been horrible with!
Either way, I was correct and it ended up being some beautiful box elder and more importantly it was still good! Minus some slight tear out that will need some extra care when finishing but I’m just glad to know the wood, especially something as unique as box elder, wasn’t wasted.
I decided for the first time using it I needed to turn something extra special and I figured this beautiful piece of sweet gum, pith included, would be the perfect piece. Honestly, I was a little hesitant to approach this with the pith due to turning that section of the log and more importantly the drying process but surprisingly, everything went better than I anticipated and I’m happy to say that there were no major cracks while the piece was drying!
It’s been a big goal of mine to get into turning deeper forms for a while now. I spent a lot of 2025 going big on the diameter of my turning and so now I want to put more effort into turning taller. This piece here comes in around 12” tall and is one of the deeper pieces I have turned so far! Since this piece was turned late last year, it is actually dry and ready for finishing so expect to see that here soon and also more work done with the Pro-Forme as well! Also if you have any tips at all for using it, I definitely welcome those as even now after a few months of use feel like I still have a lot to learn! 😅
One of the guys I get my logs from called me up a few weeks ago asking if I’d be around because he was going to drop something off. Later that afternoon, he’s pulling this massive cherry burl off the back of the truck telling me it’s mine but the catch is, he’s unsure if the wood is actually any good.
From the looks of it, it was hard to tell. There was ant damage, lots of cracks and some voids all around the surface but until you actually cut into it is when you’ll know for certain and that’s exactly what I did!
I ended up filming the entire process of this piece which will be available on YouTube later today so be sure to check it out if you’d like see more of the process and a little bit of frustration I’d run into…
To see the process of how this was made, be sure to check out my YouTube; the video will be posted later this morning at 10:30 am!
