Who else is going to warped tour this weekend?
Years ago one of my clients got in with a barber down the street while I was unavailable, and the story he told me later was that the barber got frustrated with him because he didn’t know what he wanted. Like a “how can I cut your hair if you don’t tell me how to do it?” kind of thing.

Now I’m not like haircut omakase where you come in and I only do what I feel like, but if you’re ever not sure what you should do with your hair I’m happy to tell you about the gut feeling— well that’s a simple way to describe it, but after enough years you can look at someone’s hair, comb it around for a second, and know what it will do well.

JP’s hair is notoriously hard to lay down, so on this day we steered into the skid and designed it to stick out. That’s what his hair wants to do, after all. The longer I do this the more I believe that the best looks are usually the ones that depart the least from how the hair wants to live. Fighting your hair never looks as good as letting it move and breathe the way it wants.
I do a lot of rock hair, but I can do country, too. Huge shout out to for going along with my little skit idea here. This was based on an actual event where a guy in a baseball hat showed me a picture of a guy in a baseball hat and didn’t care what was happening under the hat.
Some days you blow dry, some days you wet style, some days you do nothing to your hair. This process isn’t necessarily meant to be a daily routine (unless you want it to be) it’s just A way you can style your hair.
I started playing guitar when I was like 10 years old and then in high school I played in a few garage bands but in my early 20’s I was able to get involved in a project with dudes who were more talented than me and we did some decent shows and made a few songs I was actually proud of. By the time music fell apart for me I had been doing hair a while and in my frustration about not getting anywhere with music I asked myself what “getting anywhere” looked like, what did I want from music? The answer is that I wanted to create something people liked, I wanted to write songs people enjoyed, and I wanted to tour and travel. Then it hit me that every time I did a haircut I created something someone enjoyed, and at that point I was traveling all over the world doing hair stuff. So I hung up my guitar for the last time and never picked it up again.
One of the hardest things for me to learn with hairstyling was how to style hair that doesn’t look STYLED. Once you learn hairstyling it’s easy to perfectly sculpt and piece things out, and the impulse is to control exactly what each hair is doing, but I’d see movies and stuff where the hair looks good without looking like anyone DID it. If you couldn’t guess by my portfolio here on the gram these are my favorite types of looks. Lived in, casual, real, and not like you tried really hard to look just right but like you just stepped out of a real moment in your actual life.
Super common conversation in the salon. Client says “I’ve been trying to grow it out but I don’t know if I can handle how big and fluffy it feels” and I ask how often they shampoo. Typically I’ll hear “every day” or “every other day.” Then I recommend waiting as long as possible between shampoos and just seeing what the hair does to find out what’s optimal— typically hair gets better for a few days and then eventually it gets worse. That’s shampoo day. It’s common for me to hear back “but I hit the gym daily, isn’t that gross?” Or “the product starts to feel heavy.” Then I explain about using lighter products and ask about how often their girlfriend/wife/sister/mom shampoos and I kid you not the next reply is usually “she’s been telling me I should shampoo less.” There’s some scientific method involved, testing what works for you, but four out of five times when a client who felt too fluffy tries this they come back and tell me that the game has been changed.
Nothing is all that new, just new names for the new generation. I’m okay with it, language is meant to evolve. But if I’ve never heard of the haircut you want, just show me a picture.
California dates opened through the end of 2026! Link to book is in my bio. Thank you!!

Important! If you book anything on a Monday, those days are opened as my flights are booked, depending on when I get in— anything booked on a Monday comes with the risk of flights being delayed or cancelled. Don’t book a Monday if it’s a very very important haircut.
(find me at the East Nashville location under Andrew K, book it as “barber cut” even if that’s not what we’re doing😁)
