At Gully House, natural stone weaves the landscape into the architecture, making you feel immersed in its dramatic surroundings. Endicott crazy paving, with its soft grey and brown hues, irregular shapes and split-stone finish, is applied generously across both the interior and exterior. The result is a seamless continuity that blurs the boundary between inside and out.

525 George St is a proposal for a mixed-use building housing cinemas, retail, hotel and residential building located in the heart of Sydney. The design was developed as part of an invited City of Sydney Design Excellence competition. Our approach was informed by the site’s rich theatrical, material history and the precinct’s tight grain urbanity. We actively pursued a material proposition for the podium that re-stiches into the site the masonry building fabric disrupted by many of the entertainment buildings constructed on and adjacent the site since the 1980’s.

Wishing everyone a Happy 2026!

To kick off the new year, we will be sharing some more past ABA projects! Brick House was completed in 2021, our brief for this new two storey dwelling was for a family home of 5 bedrooms, a study and associated living rooms on a wide block in Bondi. The concept proposed a brick base with three ‘bridges’ spanning across the brickwork, creating an internal rhythm of bedroom volumes and double high skylight voids that define the interior.

The design continues our investigation of how to create privacy from neighbouring dwellings while maintaining connections to landscape and the sky. For this, Brick House utilised large glazed windows above the brick walls detailed to have no visible evidence of window framing, creating the illusion that all public spaces of the interior are open to the external elements beyond. The floor introduces a subtle topography into the flat site with level changes at the living and dining area to create thresholds within the open plan arrangement.

Some images from a past ABA project in the Inner West. Our concept was to re-create the warehouse interior through design by subtraction, removing the extraneous elements to create a clear, open interior built around a centrally located pool and fostering moments to reflect light deep into the interior.

Completed in 2003, this apartment is located on the top level of a 1940’s brick apartment building high on the ridgeline of South Bondi. A 78sq.m north facing building was conceived as a retreat from urban life – creating a simple minimal interior that reworked the windows to act as frames to the beach and suburb beyond. Within the interior the walls are a simple white to capture the hues of the coast as they reflect back into the apartment, with moments of colour reminiscent of the ocean edge introduced by the bathroom stone.

Completed in 2019, Surfside House is situated within a varied streetscape of semis and apartment buildings tucked just below the Clovelly ridgeline. Our initial brief was to modify the existing 1930s semi to create an expanded ground level living area, with new bedrooms on the upper level. We reconsidered the convention and arrived at a solution that instead lifted the living areas, opening them to expansive views. To do this, the house was conceived as an extension of the characteristic stepped climb up from Clovelly beach, positioning the program across a series of platforms gradually climbing out of the containment of coastal banksia vegetation, positioning the living platforms above the tree line with striking views back to Clovelly’s rock platforms, the ocean, and the horizon south and east.

As we enter the summer break, we look back at our proposal for ‘The Water City’, our contribution to the City of Sydney’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030—2050 Continuing the Vision’ plan.

Working alongside the City’s City Sustainability Team, ABA investigated opportunities for Harbour Swimming as water quality in the Harbour continues to improve through water sensitive design initiatives.

The Water City project envisions an active civic foreshore dotted with harbour baths playing host to a range of active and passive recreational opportunities. Proposed interventions include pools at foreshore parks, reconstructed edges, and floating pools for areas with unresolved water quality. These concepts illustrate how improved water quality could enable transformative swimming experiences across the harbour, while extending civic, cultural, and ecological programs to create a vibrant waterfront.

The projects outlined here were speculative in nature, as part of the City’s 2050 Vision to re-imagine the Harbour edge with the future harbour as a safe and clean water body, exploring potential harbour locations for swimming. None of the proposals are endorsed by City of Sydney as actual projects in specific locations.

We were invited to participate in the Infrastructure NSW Design Competition for the Fitout of the Cutaway, with the brief to create a nationally significant flexible arts and event space within the existing space.

Our starting point was recognising the found quality of the Cutaway, as an atmospheric, cavernous void with potential. We recognised the existing the space has a kind of geographic character and scale that makes it memorable and monumental, but it also has a raw, incomplete quality which creates a lot of possibilities for appropriation.

Our strategy was to amplify the qualities of the existing space, while enabling its potential for a diversity of uses and appropriations through new functional infrastructure and a distinct and memorable entry experience. We proposed a light touch that maintained the atmospheric quality of the existing space with an overlay of functional infrastructure that made events feasible within the Cutaway.

We congratulate for their winning scheme, opening in 2026.
