“Straws” 🔴

My recent Open Studios in Sausalito was wonderful—but definitely quieter than past years.

Instead of the usual crowds, I spent most of the weekend painting, stopping now and then to answer questions or let people simply watch the process unfold.

No big sales weekend, and if I’m honest, there were moments where I wondered if the quieter pace meant less connection.

Then, a week later, an email from Joe:

“Is ‘Straws’ still available?”

He had quietly stopped by Open Studios, spent time with the painting, and kept thinking about it.

Today, I helped install “Straws” in its new Sausalito home.

A good reminder that sometimes the results of showing up take a little longer to reveal themselves.

You never know.
Coco is still here.
What started as a crow on the neighbor’s roof has somehow turned into a daily check-in. She perches above our deck each morning like a tiny feathered landlord, quietly judging our life choices.

I still love the silhouette against the morning sky — equal parts regal, mysterious, and slightly intimidating.

(And yes… occasional peanuts may still be involved.)

I’ve always loved how my paintings look on a mucky studio wall just before they head off to their more polished lives. There’s something about seeing them surrounded by paint splatters and studio chaos that feels honest — like catching them in their natural habitat.

I even hung this one up for one last photo before it headed to the immaculate walls of.

This piece was both an exploration of color and an exercise in restraint. I stayed within a relatively narrow range of reds, oranges, and pinks, pushing subtle shifts in temperature and value rather than reaching for every color on the palette.

Somewhere along the way, “Red Skies at Night” by The Fixx came on my 80s playlist… and this painting quietly renamed itself.

“Pink Skies at Night”
Some paintings arrive with a clear explanation. This wasn’t one of them. Maybe it’s the Andy Warhol in me bumping into the Diebenkorn in me. One thing Instagram has taught me: don’t be afraid to share the experiments. Even the weird ones.
Same ride. Different mood.
1 or 2?

I often make several color studies before committing to a painting. Here I added a more complex foreground shadow in one version. I like the added depth and mystery… but I wonder if the simpler original is stronger.
A quiet horizon with a lot to say.

Low Horizon — where color, memory, and atmosphere start to take over.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a painting… is stop trying so hard.

I was struggling with this still life and it was starting to feel way too precious. So I painted over it and decided to just have some fun.

Will I be known for my cow paintings? Probably not 😏

But I’ll definitely remember how much fun this one was to paint.

Sometimes the “failed” painting teaches you the most.

🎨 Don’t be so precious with paint.
Where is your happy place?

For me, it’s often somewhere near the water. The coast has a way of slowing things down—the light, the color, the feeling of space.

“Coastal Break” is a celebration of all of that… a place filtered through memory, mood, and a little invented color.

Sometimes a painting is less about a specific place and more about a feeling you want to hold onto.

Golden Bay

The light in my Sausalito studio has definitely found its way into this one.

I’m always thinking about light—how it changes color, mood, and even memory. Golden Bay is inspired by San Francisco, but more than anything, it’s about atmosphere.

OK.. some of you may need to put your 🕶️ for this one. Here’s another from my “Electric Light” 💡 series. In my past two posts, I mentioned my color influences from Wolf Kahn #hungrylikethewolf & David Hockney (my hero) but I should also mention the king of wild color, Richard Mayhew! So QUESTION OF THE DAY.. Sunglasses or no sunglasses 🕶️ 😎???? Tell me if I’m taking it too far. (And then I’ll know I’m on the right track 😂) #colorist #ilovecolor #colormyworld #richardmayhew
