Andrew Budziak is a Canadian filmmaker and environmental storyteller whose work pushes the boundaries of what we know about life beneath winter ice. As the founder and expedition lead of Freeze The Future, he pioneered the first large-scale citizen-science ice-diving initiative to collect intact algae from the underside of frozen lakes, an ecosystem long considered inaccessible. His team’s expeditions have opened a new frontier in freshwater research, delivering rare samples now being sequenced by labs across North America and cryobanked at the Canadian Museum of Nature.
