THE VOID MIGRATES TO THE SURFACE
Now on view through 12 January 2026
Fotografiska Shanghai
Curated by Peipei Han and Ziyan Zhang

In Andrea Galvani’s latest cinematic masterpiece, seconds become minutes, several weeks become 73 years

“The Void Migrates to the Surface” powerfully, radically slows down time. The artist used advanced technology to extend the short lives of rare and endangered butterflies from a few weeks to the global average human life expectancy of 73 years.

Through a monumental and immersive video and sound installation conceived and developed specifically for Fotografiska Shanghai, Galvani brings us into a new dimension of time and transforms our perception of nature. “The Void Migrates to the Surface,” curated by Peipei Han and Ziyan Zhang, constitutes the artist’s premiere institutional solo exhibition in Asia.

Sonically woven throughout the space is a soundtrack by acclaimed composer and musician Federico Albanese, developed especially for Galvani’s presentation at Fotografiska. Luminous yet melancholic, intricate yet hopeful, the music interprets the images’ majestic power — melodically
synchronizing the visual ascent and descent, stillness and motion that unravel across a different order of time.

Galvani’s monumental minimalist multichannel videosculptural installation is comprised by just two elements, two material components amplifying its temporal character: casts of large, million-year-old sacred stones from the Andes Mountains that support high-definition color screens with videos of splendid butterflies that ascend and descend repeatedly on the stone.

Tiny scales fall like iridescent dust, glittering vibrant matter leaving an evanescent trail behind. We perceive in these works a delicate, natural aging process—the subtle passage of time inscribed upon wings that slowly bend and fray from friction, air’s soft resistance. Merging nature and technology, deep geological time and a brief flash of spirit, the artist invites us into a new cosmology.

THE VOID MIGRATES TO THE SURFACE
Opening today: 31 January, 6-10pm
Guadalajara, México

With “The Void Migrates to the Surface,” Galvani constructs a new ecosystem—large-scale rocks, botanical monuments, advanced technology, a fragile architecture of natural elements, displaced and suspended, songs of extinct birds mysteriously reverberate. “The Void Migrates to the Surface” takes on a clear political, philosophical, and existential direction—life is an event that embodies time in a continuous natural flow, without perimeters.

Galería CURRO is proud to announce “Andrea Galvani: The Void Migrates to the Surface,” a monumental immersion site-specifically designed for the 400m² main gallery—opening Friday, 31 January as part of Gdl Art Wknd 2025.

At the heart of the exhibition, Galvani’s multichannel videosculptural installation unravels our preconceived notion of time. The work coalesces around a powerful action: extending the short lives of twenty different species of rare and endangered butterflies from a few weeks to 73 years, the global average human life expectancy.

This is just a preview of an entirely new body of work that will premiere at my solo show “The Void Migrates to the Surface” with in Guadalajara, Mexico opening end of January 2025💥

Towers of botanical archaeology, “The Lost Garden of Heaven” is composed by life-size, artisanal ceramic replicas of lost and extinct heirloom apples. Most of these apples had not been tasted for 150 years, some were rescued from the last known trees of their kind. Celebrating the revival of these vital plants, Galvani is working with pomologists and “apple hunters” to memorialize hundreds of rare and extinct varieties.

Galvani’s new body of work illuminates invisible synergies between different life forms, the richness of ecological entanglements, and how these phenomena unfold across deep, nonlinear time.

Over 3 years in the making, this project encompasses video, sculpture, photography, and sound installation produced between Mexico, Peru, and the United States with the collaboration of major institutions including North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics and Macaulay Library at Cornell University, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera & Biodiversity, American Museum of Natural History, and more.

More soon….stay tuned ‼️

Andrea Galvani’s “Study on Omega-Minus” depicts one of the most important discoveries in physics from the last century. This neon sculpture traces the very first time the “omega-minus” particle was observed – a landmark event that took place on 24 February 1964 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Galvani’s sculpture opens a portal into an uncanny subatomic world where objects defy the laws of space and time that we know from the reality we experience. The sinuous and bizarre vegetal form of “Study on Omega-Minus” unlocks nature’s deep symmetries, reminding us of the immense and invisible mysteries that sustain life and enable existence.

🌕🌑TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE 2024🌑🌕

Eclipses dazzled our ancestors ✨ now that we better understand the astronomy behind them, they are even more powerful

When the moon occludes the sun, the world we know becomes hauntingly beautiful in its uncanniness. Temperatures drop, colors change, darkness descends across the sky. Animals react instinctively, flowers close. It lasts for mere minutes before everyday energies fall back into place. How miraculous to live on a planet where we can experience this cosmic alignment
