It’s all about learning to love the process…. And all the misses and fails are a part of that process.

If you’re just thinking about starting jump rope, get used to the feeling of sucking 😆 That’s where progress starts.

If you’re learning and practicing the mic release, avoid the urge to step forward with one foot to trap the rope!

Instead, aim to catch the rope under both feet using a toe catch. Yes, this is harder to do… BUT, it will make your mic releases better as it trains you to make that nice “U” shape with the rope so that you can jump it and continue on.

I’m a working mom who is often tired and overwhelmed. Getting 8-9 hours of sleep is a distant memory of pre-kids. If I relied on feeling good to go workout … or do anything for that matter, nothing would ever get done.

There’s no easy hack, but you can set yourself up with some preparation. Book your classes in advance. Book your PT sessions. Lay out your clothes the night before. Get it in your calendar. Do your workouts early in the day if possible to just get it done! That might mean waking up a bit earlier than you’re used to. Get a coach or accountability buddy.

Eliminate the decision fatigue and just SHOW UP. Your effort may be 80% one day and only 20% another day… and that’s OK!

You’ve heard it all before: Something is better than nothing. Progress not perfection. Done is better than perfect.

Essentially, it’s the all or nothing attitude that holds us back.

The cool thing about working on this mindset shift in the gym is that it also transfers to everything else! Work projects, public speaking, meal prepping, the list goes on. Whatever seems like a daunting task that you don’t feel like doing … just DO it.

I swear …if you overcome that hurdle once where you just DO something you don’t feel like doing, it re-wires your brain to make that decision feel a little easier over time. It also helps you build confidence that you CAN do hard things.

It’s a hard habit to break and it’s NOT easy to do at first, but I promise you that it’s worth the effort!

We all know that consistency is key 🔑 and this mindset shift will get you there.

I figured since I was teaching a class on Halloween, this 80’s aerobic instructor costume was perfect.

Fun fact: I used to do Jane Fonda workouts at home with my mom when I was little. I had a pink outfit just like hers.

Here I am, living my dream! 😅

Happy Halloween 🎃

I’ve never really tried the mamba and shuffle together until the other day. I can do both of those skills independently quite easily. But putting them together is a lot tougher! My brain is working overtime here to coordinate my legs and arms 😅

Just a few clips of my session from the other day. I love that I can take my rope with me anywhere and get a quick workout in.

When it’s an increase in heart rate that I’m after, then my go-to workout with my rope is double unders and speed step. Simple yet effective 🔥🫀

For example, 1:1 work to rest interval:

✅ 30 seconds of speed step
🛑 30 seconds of rest
✅ 30 seconds of double unders
🛑 30 seconds of rest
🔁 repeat

Basic Cross ❌

If you’re learning how to jump rope, you’re going to want to master this fundamental skill! 📝

▪️Start with hands on either side of body in “open” position
▪️Rotate the rope and as it moves past your head and as it falls in front of you, begin to cross your arms by bringing one arm overtop of the other.
▪️Keep arms close to body - don’t let them drift away from you!
▪️Forearms should be in contact with each other (not wrists and not elbows) this will allow enough space to clear the rope.
▪️Keep your hands low and scoop your wrists to rotate the rope
▪️Notice how the handles are pointed down as the rope passes under my feet
▪️Once you jump the rope in the cross position, “unscoop” your wrists to bring the rope back to over your head
▪️As the rope begins to fall infront of you, bring your hands back to the “open” position.

You’re likely going to have one arm that feels comfortable crossing over the other, which is totally normal, and would be considered your “dominant” arm.

Once you get the hang of the mechanics and timing of this skill, make sure you practice on the other side as well! You’ll want to be able to do this skill on both sides to make some fun combos! 🙌

Hopefully these slow-mos and still-shots from the front and side angles help some of you understand and unlock the cross and make jump rope more fun!! 👊😃

3 years ago was when I picked up that old jump rope I had lying around that never got used because I got inspired to try a trick I stumbled across on the internet. Shout out to for blowing my mind when she did a swing cross 🤯

Not long after that I came across page and saw how much she was progressing and thought I’d like to learn more and see what I’m capable of.

I was a volleyball player - so jumping wasn’t new to me. So when the rope was in my hands I just wanted to jump as high as I could. I took the tricks I learned and immediately went to seeing if I could do them as double unders. I didn’t care to spend much time on making sure I was doing those skills efficiently or with proper technique because I really didn’t know any better.

Then I came across and he gave me some feedback on my side swings and I just couldn’t get my head around it. I needed to understand how to make those better.

I hired him as my coach online for about 10 months and really made all of my progress in that time. Not only did I learn specific skills but I learned jump rope theory which helped me to understand how skills can work together.

Spending the time to focus on the fundamentals paid dividends because it led me to be able to do more complicated tricks more easily, with less effort. Don’t neglect the fundamentals!

The thing I’m most proud of though is the welcoming and inclusive community we’ve built in over the last couple of years, and through that, the friends I’ve made. Thanks to and for co-founding this together with me. If you’re in Vancouver, come join us! Link is in my bio to sign up for free.

I’m happy to say I’ve found the most enjoyable form of cardio in jump rope!! The benefits are enormous and if you’ve ever had a thought it trying it out…. You SHOULD! 😊
