At Frieze New York 2026, mor charpentier brings together two practices centered on migration and the human experience within geographical and existential constraints.
Anas Albraehe, born in Syria and trained between Damascus and Beirut, develops a pictorial language informed by psychology and a chromatic sensibility influenced by classical painting. In The Sleeper on the Cloud, figures dissolve into suspended environments where clouds become unstable foundations, evoking fragility, impermanence, and the search for refuge within constantly shifting conditions.
Nohemí Pérez, born in Colombia’s Catatumbo border region, revisits the tradition of the seascape in her new series Abismo. Through charcoal and layered, textured gestures, she constructs dense, unstable marine landscapes where human presence becomes almost spectral, reduced to minimal traces against overwhelming natural forces. Her work reflects on the imbalance between bodies and environments shaped by displacement and movement.
By placing the human figure within vast marine and atmospheric landscapes, both artists reflect on migration as a condition shaped by tension, resilience, and transformation. Their works turn lived experiences of displacement into visual narratives marked by vulnerability, strength, and the ongoing search for stability.
See you at Frieze New York, May 13–17, 2026.
This new body of work marks a clear turning point within his ongoing Dream Catcher series. The paintings no longer focus on capturing the dream, but on entering it fully. The figure is placed on a cloud understood not as a setting, but as an unstable and shifting form, without fixed structure or permanence.
The body is not simply at rest. It is positioned in a state of uncertainty, resting on a surface that could dissolve at any moment. Within this framework, the cloud becomes both a formal and conceptual element, pointing to fragility, impermanence, and the instability of the mental space it reflects.
The project is grounded in a study of clouds and grey tonal relationships, developed through a controlled and reduced palette. Developed in part in Paris, it engages with a long tradition of painters who treated the sky as an object of close observation, including Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Gustave Courbet, and Camille Corot.
Born in Syria in 1991, Albraehe lives and works between Beirut and Paris. He trained in painting and drawing at the University of Fine Arts in Damascus, and later completed a Master’s degree in Psychology and Art Therapy at the Lebanese University. This background informs a practice that connects visual composition with psychological states, particularly through the role of colour and perception. Across his work, Albraehe develops an intuitive approach to painting, where colour is used as both structure and emotional register. Influenced by French painting traditions and shaped by his personal trajectory between Syria, Lebanon, and France, his practice translates lived experience and memory into constructed pictorial spaces.
paintings from this serie will be presented at Frieze New York from May 13 to May 17, 2026.
