Really enjoyed speaking to Éimear Smith and the wonderful team at Longford Life about my festive traditions in Longford, Dublin, east London and Speyside over the years. From going to see my twin sister singing carols with The Park Singers to our annual ‘sisters at the Christmas tree’ photo, we’ve had some really amazing Xmas holidays over the years!

Thank you Eimear for such a fun interview. If you’ve not already heard of Longford Life magazine, please do check it out. It shows the litany of nice things going on in my home county - lovely Longford. Merry Christmas everyone 🎄

Channel 4 has just released a documentary called ‘Will AI Take My Job?’ which I must watch as I made a documentary on this very topic for almost a decade ago called ‘Will A Robot Steal My Job?’

At the time, the conversation about the impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce was largely focused on robotics and automation. The word ‘AI’ hadn’t entered into everyday vernacular. Generative AI was being used by a range of industries (including my own), but the capability was more limited and the scale of user adoption had yet to reach the stratospheric levels that we’ve seen over the past few years with the explosion of ChatGPT.

In the Channel 4 documentary, humans are pitted against machines to find out who’s the best worker. It’s a great storytelling device and something we also did in my 2017 doc, putting my own profession (journalism) to the test.

In ‘Will A Robot Steal My Job’? I attended a football match and got to read the copy that was produced straight after the game: one by a human, the other by an AI. If memory serves, the robojournalism was produced using a tool called Wordsmith by Automated Insights (“the world’s first self-service natural language generation platform”). This tool was being used by the likes of The Associated Press.

What Automated Insights did was at the vanguard of AI in media, using NLP and LLMs to produce fast and efficient news copy (with a human in the loop). In theory, getting machines to take on routine tasks should free humans up to do more specialised work that leans into their craft, skills, and experience. Importantly, this is the kind of work that audiences trust and connect with and are willing to pay for. But the disruption to the business model of media is getting in the way of us doing that imho.

While a lot has changed since I made that documentary back in 2017, many of the key learnings still stand.

For years, I’ve been a dedicated viewer of the Pride of Britain Awards. So you can imagine my delight when one of the first things I got to do when I joined the Mirror was work with the Pride of Britain team, leading the editorial content strategy for the 25th anniversary. This team works tirelessly behind the scenes to bring you what is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important events of the year.

But what many people may not know is that Pride of Britain isn’t just about one night. Yes, it’s an annual awards ceremony hosted brilliantly by Carole Vorderman and Ashley Banjo. But it is also a community and movement with stories of kindness, courage and bravery being told throughout the year. The work of the team behind it happens on an ongoing basis. As the world feels increasingly fraught and divided, I believe events like the Pride of Britain Awards are needed more than ever. It’s a poignant reminder of what really matters in life – collaboration, decency, and integrity, often in the face of the most adverse circumstances.

Massive congrats as always to Michelle Linaker, Shiraz Lalani and all the Pride of Britain team for your unwavering dedication and hard work. I didn’t make it to the event this year, but I will be returning as a dedicated viewer, watching with an additional dose of pride — not only for the winners but also for the team that makes it happen.

You can watch the 2025 awards on ITV on Thursday, 23 Oct at 8pm and on streaming service ITVX after it airs. Highlights of the awards are also on the Pride of Britain YouTube and social media channels.

This time last week… the most beautiful night at the Paul Costelloe show in City Hall, Dublin. Fantastic to see walk the runway in a full circle moment as she modelled for Paul’s show back in 2004 when she was Miss World.

I enjoyed the night so much as I took my big brother Paul along as my plus one. We got chatting to so many lovely people there including.

Big congrats to the team on such a gorgeous show and well done and all the team on a brilliant event. #irelandfashionweek #paulcostelloe #irishdesign
When I was invited to attend the first ever Ireland Fashion Week I just knew that I not only wanted to wear Irish, but I also wanted to wear something from ShareJoy — the non-profit that I set up with Maeve McMahon and Marie Sullivan back in 2021 in memory of Marie’s daughter Arwen.

ShareJoy was founded to celebrate the joy of circular fashion, to spotlight Irish design and to bring people together. It’s a positive force that amplifies the great things about fashion (creativity, community, expression, identity) while also countering over consumption and throw away culture. Sales from the ShareJoy shop raise funds for suicide prevention with 100% of proceeds going to our charity partners.

Big thanks to my twin sister Sinead for letting me raid her wardrobe to borrow this Louise Kennedy suit from the ShareJoy launch edit. Louise needs no introduction and it was an honour to have a piece from her collection in the ShareJoy edit, which I wore to the Irish Sea Show (a celebration of 40 emerging Irish designers). Separate post on that to follow!

Sidenote: these are actually my glasses! Not just for the occasion. They felt perfectly in keeping with how was styled wearing the same jacket for

In my happy place at work this week … piloting new formats, producing visual journalism and working with our team of specialists to tell the stories that really help audiences understand the big issues of our time. This photo shows our environment editor with the Mirror team in Reach Studios. We filmed an explainer video with Nada on why our summers are getting hotter. TLDR it all comes back to fossil fuels. I count myself lucky to work with such experts in their respective fields and am excited to be part of a team bringing Mirror journalism to life in new ways. #originaljournalism #heatwave #climatechange #sustainability #mirrorinfocus
On the OG of talks shows! The Late Late Show on RTE is the longest running live chat show in the world and something of a TV institution. Basically, it’s iconic.

Since it started in the 1960’s it’s had a long tradition of pushing boundaries, setting precedents and reflecting the social and cultural zeitgeist. So it was a real highlight to be invited on to the show to chat to host Patrick Kielty about artificial intelligence ahead of the broadcast of my latest TV documentary next week.

Got to share the hot seat with Blindboy and Alastair Campbell. And I saw first hand how inspirational Katriona O’Sullivan is!

We only just managed to scratch the surface in our conversation. That’s the nature of live TV. But there is a full hour long programme on RTE One next week. It goes into the harms of AI (like deep fakes, bias, misinformation) not to mention the positive impact on healthcare, climate and education.

Game Changer: AI & You, RTE One, 10.15pm Thurs 16 November 2023.

Big thanks for inviting me on!

Such an honour and a privilege to be featured on the platform with an in-depth profile about my career to-date. The piece is in the entrepreneurs section of AllBright and I have to admit, that in itself is a bit of a pinch me moment.

To be following my dream of running my own business after a very rich career in media with and feels nothing short of amazing.

As a journalist, it’s always strange to be the one being interviewed. But Emily Armstrong, who produced this feature, put me so at ease. Emily asked really informed questions which were clearly very well researched while also being such a great listener. Thank you so much Emily. And big thanks to and for bringing women together in such an empowering and inspired way with AllBright.

I have so much more to say about the magic that can happen when women lift each other up but will save it for future posts.

If you’d like to read the AllBright profile and get to know a little bit more about me and my journey, I’ve added the link in my bio.

When I received a call from my dear friend Maeve McMahon in Autumn 2020 telling me about the impact that lockdown had on her pal Marie Sullivan, it stopped me in my tracks. Marie had lost her daughter Arwen within the first few weeks of lockdown. As a journalist, I’ve come across many devastating stories but something about this felt different. Being locked down in London unable to get back to Ireland and having the time to really listen to Marie share her grief was humbling.

After learning that Arwen and I shared a passion for sustainable fashion, mental health and yoga, the idea for ShareJoy came to fruition so naturally. The concept is simple: curate a fashion edit of items donated by Irish women and sell them on the mobile shopping app with proceeds going to Think of ShareJoy as a really curated online charity shop that’s full of fashion gems where you get to know the people behind the clothes.

It may feel like there’s little to be joyful about right now. The pandemic has brought untold pain and loss. ShareJoy wants to bring some much needed light into these darker days by focusing on the things that are important at a time when we’ve been able to re-evaluate what matters most — people and the planet.

We want to ensure that young people in particular and their families get the support and resources they need to navigate the social and economic consequences of Covid19. We want to use technology in a purpose-driven way focusing on time-well-spent. So if you’re squandering hours on our Instagram then there’s something we’re not getting right. We want to leverage the power of pre-loved fashion in the circular economy to raise funds and reinforce the third sector.

Beyond that, I hope that ShareJoy serves as a celebration of Irish talent and ingenuity. For me, every woman in this launch edit represents something special. ShareJoy is a reminder of what’s possible when Irish women put their hearts, minds and wardrobes together.
