I’ve had to slowww down whether I like it or not because the body does indeed keep the score. This year my motto is more tortoise less hare, and it’s hard!
I’m definitely starting to feel like myself again, so I’ll be back here soon. I have an exciting (and hopefully helpful) project to launch and A LOT to talk about.
Wishing you strength and courage with your creative projects and good health, (don’t take it for granted like I did lol). See you soon 💛✨
Videos include recent trips to Valencia and Marseille, highly recommend both.

Right now I’m in Porto on “holiday”. Trying to launch something I’ve been dreaming about for years in the next few months. Recording in a bathroom.
No be easy o. At all at all.
*Please forgive the unedited auto generated captions, it pains me but I don’t have time for an edit!
But if your bio is vague, boring, too long (and let me guess, out of date?), it’s probably costing you opportunities.
The template I’ve created (+2 examples) will help you to stop overthinking and write your bio with ease. Or at least with less torment 😫.
There is no single way to write a bio of course, and you’re very welcome to use this as a starting point. The most important thing is to make it clear, compelling, and concise (oh and up to date! ).

Yet art schools are still mostly focusing on technique, theory, and history, with only very basic business training. (It’s usually one semester tacked on at the end).
I don’t blame them, for the most part they’re delivering what students and the industry they’re supplying demand of them.
But no amount of talent and dedication can stop artists being taken advantage of, underpaid, and feeling ready to quit because the industry is so tough.
I interviewed a number of financially successful artists I know and asked how they’ve overcome their knowledge gaps.
Their answers were straightforward (books, courses, coaches/consultants), and it’s something anyone can do. But we need to normalise it and provide more support.
I can’t help with the first two on that list [yet], but I am offering 3 artists a free one-hour marketing consultation each.

Whether you want to sell more physical items or tickets, you can adapt these sales strategies to fit.
*This isn’t the best technique for digital products, we can talk about that soon.
You might not feel the need to use these techniques every time, but they’re proven to work so give them a shot and let me know how it goes.
Well, that cost me months of wasted time and a thousand pounds last year. It’s a lesson I’ won’t forget.
Now I’m working with a team of people who not only see my vision, they’re adding the best parts of their own to it.
Together, we’re building something I’m already so proud of. I can’t wait to tell you all about it soon.
In the meantime, what are you working on?
It’s just as important as writing (hear me out), since people who can’t read, or see, or hear, can enjoy videos.
Even so, most of us don’t learn how to make video at school. Not only that, there’s a stigma attached to communicating through video.
Yet people are constantly asking how I do it, and trying to find the confidence to start themselves. Even my family are calling me for tips!
So, here’s a breakdown of my process, all the gear, software, and lighting I use to make videos. None of it is expensive or hard to do, or I probably wouldn’t be doing it 😂
If you scroll my feed you’ll notice (I hope) that I’m gradually getting better at this. As a perfectionist, I can tell you it’s incredibly hard learning in public. Even with a lovely community rooting for you 🙏🏾✨
If I can do this, you definitely can. However, I’m not suggesting everyone SHOULD make videos of themselves or of anything else.
Use the right medium for your message.
The problem is that video is a daunting medium (so you use another), and the message gets lost. If that’s you, I hope this video helps.

Funders DO want to help people, but they DON’T want their money to go to waste. They want it to make an impact.
How do they do that? By choosing projects and ideas that sound promising.
BUT, you can submit a very promising application and still miss out. Here’s why:
Imagine you’re in a room with me and 5 other judges, and we’re arguing over who gets the last 10k. How do we decide?
Usually, by separating applications into those who can wait until next time, and those who can’t because they’ll miss out on an opportunity that’s time-sensitive.
“Ama’s application is so detailed! Naima didn’t tell us as much about her practice.”
“Yes, however, Ama could reapply. Their project could happen at any time in the next few years. Naima will lose out on that exciting collaborative commission in this year’s Venice Biennale, which would be a huge opportunity for her.”
It’s pretty hard to argue with that. I’d give it to Naima.
The secret is to make it feel urgent.
Make funders scared to miss out on funding your application. Don’t assume they’ll be able to guess why this support will help you, be really clear. Give them a great argument if they have to fight your corner in a judging round.
Good luck!
