가장 기억에 남는 수술은 다낭성 신종* 환자의 로봇 신장 절제 및 신장이식 수술이에요. 비대해진 신장은 유착이 심해 정교한 박리가 필요한 만큼 고난도 수술로 꼽힙니다. 10시간 동안 이어진 수술에서도 의료진은 완벽한 팀워크를 보여줬고, 환자도 수술 후 빠르게 회복했어요. 서울아산병원 의료진의 저력을 느낄 수 있는 시간이었습니다.

"I want to apply advanced robotic kidney transplantation techniques to treat pediatric patients in Vietnam"

I chose the path of pediatric surgery after learning that "treating one child means saving their entire lifetime ahead." I was determined to become an expert in kidney and urological malformations, which account for a high proportion of congenital diseases. Since October last year, I've been training in robotic kidney transplantation under Professor Sung Shin from the Division of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation.
The most memorable surgery was a robotic kidney removal and kidney transplantation for a polycystic kidney disease patient. The enlarged kidney had severe adhesions requiring precise dissection, making it a highly complex procedure. Even during the 10-hour surgery, the medical staff showed perfect teamwork, and the patient recovered quickly after surgery. It was a moment when I could feel the true strength of Asan Medical Center's medical team.
After completing my training, I will return to Vietnam and apply the knowledge and surgical techniques I've learned here to treat pediatric patients with kidney diseases. I want to challenge myself with robotic surgery as well as renal vein extension using allografts, and help Vietnamese medical staff and pediatric patients who face surgical difficulties.

While working at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Kota Kinabalu, I started training at Asan Medical Center. I first learned about AMC at a 2023 conference, where I was impressed by my current supervising professor, Professor Ho-Seok Sa from the Department of Ophthalmology’s excellent research achievements and surgical outcomes. I chose Asan Medical Center without hesitation, thinking I could develop expertise in oculoplastic surgery.
I'm learning advanced surgical techniques from Professors Ho-Seok Sa and Min Kyu Yang from the Department of Ophthalmology while observing various surgeries including eyelid reconstruction, lacrimal drainage surgery, and orbital reconstruction. I'm learning so much by experiencing cases I've never encountered in Malaysia. I was also very impressed by how all medical staff collaborate for patient safety.
I want to share the new skills and expertise I've learned here with young doctors in Malaysia and apply them to patient care. I also want to contribute to cooperation and growth between ophthalmology specialists in Korea and Malaysia.

처음엔 태아 수술이 고난도 업무인데다 태아 질환 및 초음파 내용이 생소해서 이 일을 계속할 수 있을지 고민이 많았어요. 그래서 해외 학회에 교수님과 동행하며 지식을 쌓아나갔죠. 사람들과 대화하고 설명하기를 즐기는 성격 덕분인지 불안해하는 산모들을 격려하고 돕는 과정이 한결 수월했습니다.
태아수종*으로 태아 사망을 경험했던 산모에게 총 8번의 태아 수혈을 진행한 적이 있어요. 고농축 혈액을 얇은 탯줄에 천천히 주입하는 과정은 8~9명의 의료진이 짧은 시간에 밀도 높은 협업을 펼치는 일이었죠. 무사히 아이를 품에 안은 산모는 곧이어 둘째를 임신했다며 센터를 찾았고, 또 한번 출산에 성공했어요. 어려운 과정일수록 진한 기억으로 남는 것 같아요.
시술 중 "쉬운 케이스가 없네!"라는 교수님의 혼잣말이 침묵을 깬 적이 있어요. 질환들이 더욱 복잡해지면서 의료진이 느끼는 긴장감은 나날이 커지지만, 치료 목표에 다다랐을 때 '우리가 해냈다'는 순간을 함께 나눌 수 있죠. 그 순간이 정말 행복해요. 아직 세상에 나오지 않은 생명을 돌볼 때 더 큰 책임감을 느껴요.

"I want to apply world-class anesthesia expertise to liver transplantation in the Philippines"

I worked in general surgery anesthesia for 6 years in the Philippines. I learned about Asan Medical Center through my husband, who trained in the Division of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery a few years ago! I heard that it leads the global organ transplantation field, so I chose to come to Korea without hesitation, thinking it was an opportunity to systematically gain experience in advanced organ transplant anesthesia.
Liver transplantation is a very difficult and complex surgery that requires careful anesthesia management and close patient monitoring. I'm learning how to use advanced equipment and monitoring techniques for complex surgeries. When I experienced a massive transfusion situation early in my training, I was impressed that every member of the medical staff in the operating room moved systematically without panic even in a critical moment.
I'm grateful to my supervising professor, Professor Gyu-Sam Hwang from the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, and to the other professors as well. I will work harder during the remaining training period to apply the safe anesthesia protocols, advanced monitoring technologies, and accurate clinical judgment that I've learned here to liver transplantation settings in the Philippines!
