You can imagine how hard this is, especially with two other sons who I’m trying to help develop a healthy relationship with food. Yet the food messaging in our house is always “less is more” and “no sneaking food.”
This pantry represents safety and freedom for us. It might sound silly, but really it’s made me feel like a 500 pound weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Asher can wander downstairs to get Petey and I don’t have to worry about him sneaking a bag of chips and consuming 2000 calories without me even knowing.
I will still be on the lookout for food seeking. We will still be hyper vigilant. But I’m thankful for the lock on the pantry door and the freedom it represents for our family. ❤️
Special thanks to our contractor and our organizers at.
Acceptance is a constant journey. Some days feel easier than others.
Is there anything you’re really struggling to accept today? Something that just feels too complex to dismiss with a cliche? If so, I promise you aren’t alone. As always, thank you for being a community where we can say the hard things without judgement. ❤️
The wins might look different from what you envisioned or even what you’re seeing in other families - but let me remind you, they are wins nonetheless.
Asher had a meltdown at school today but he recovered! He got up and kept going. I’m so proud of him for working hard to get through it.
I want to hear from you!! What’s good today? What’s one thing (no matter how small) that made you smile or gave you hope? Share that good news! ❤️
I’m once again reminded that connection and community make everything better. It is an honor to hear fellow caregivers’ stories and have a little window into your lives. Thank you to Lynette for thinking of every detail and working behind the scenes to make sure everyone felt taken care of today!
My favorite things to talk about are caregiver stress and self care, marriage and parenthood, relationships, burnout, emotional regulation, grief, and rediscovering our identities.
My 2027 wishlist includes a talk on siblings and balancing the parenting demands of parenting a disabled child and a non-disabled child. I’d also love to dig more into marriage, resentment, the how partners can share the mental load.
Wanna brainstorm for your event? Let’s connect! 💕
That’s all.
Exhausted doesn’t even begin to describe what I felt lugging him from therapy to therapy. He’d skip naps, eat meals in the car. I was stressed about being late. It was often the worst part of my day.
Hear me when I say that therapies are essential and wonderful - I am a mental health therapist myself! But we cannot think of therapy as a cure to our child’s disability. Therapy is one tool that helps our kids live their best lives. Other tools include play time, down time, snuggles, sleeping, nutrition, community, and so much more.
Have you ever (or are you currently) struggling with therapy overload? What can go? What feels most important? What works with your life? Is anything causing more harm than good? I want to hear about it!
We talked about the feeling of being judged. With Asher’s syndrome, we have to be on constant alert for food seeking. We watch him like a hawk. Some people might find it overbearing or wonder why we act this way - but we honestly don’t have a choice.
My guess is you also have some unique habits as a parent of a disabled child. You’ve adapted to your child’s unique needs and it now feels like second nature. But maybe other people don’t fully get it.
Even if it’s with just one person, I hope you have a space where you can feel understood as a parent. ❤️
But this level of responsibility can take a toll, especially when you are the primary parent or feel like you’re carrying the mental load alone.
I just want to let you know I see you and you aren’t alone. I’m constantly inspired and given hope from our community. Your efforts matter and are making a difference.
What is one thing that you’ve done that has went unseen? I want to hear about it!
I started my book proposal for How to Handle More Than You Can Handle in the fall of 2020, got an agent in January of 2023, got offers from publishers in April of 2023, and finished writing early this year.
It’s not a coincidence that my publisher,, just so happens to be the same publisher of the book What To Expect When You’re Expecting - because this parenting journey is nothing like we expected. So... I wrote a book for US, the parents of disabled children with high support needs.
A huge thank you to every therapist, parent, and doctor who shared their stories and wisdom with me throughout this process. There are so many people who have contributed to this book.
You can order on Amazon, target, Barnes and noble, or anywhere books are sold! I did the audio recording as well and that’s available on Spotify, Audible, or anywhere else audiobooks are found. I can’t wait to hear your takeaways and thoughts so please be in touch!!
Here are a few photos from my time writing … or just of Asher. Because without him, this book would not exist.
