“Hagallah” is a twisting 3/4 shimmy with the accent downward. It’s a folkloric step that you see everywhere in raqs sharqi. From heavy and earthy to small and delicate, this pathway is so versatile and satisfying with that foot driving into the ground on the downbeat.

This one takes some time and focus so enjoy the process. Each part of the move is lovely to dance on its own. Be patient and dance each part!

Some things to keep in mind with this one:

✅ Use the obliques to lift the hip up and over on the step. This is what makes the shape of the move and will keep everything moving with momentum.

✅ Don’t let this become a vibration over one hip on a step. It has 3 distinct parts.

✅ Bend your knees & drop your tailbone

Myself and will be teaching an 8-week series all about dancing to Egyptian rhythms. Jason is a tabla player with mad chops, who also has a sensitivity to performing with dancers that makes him a great teacher. In addition to my dance experience, I bring 15 years of training as an orchestral percussionist! 🤓 We make a great team, and we’re excited to bring this unique offering to Portland.

In this course, you will:
✅ Get a tour of Egyptian percussion instruments
✅ Learn about the most common Egyptian rhythms
✅ Build your movement vocabulary in each rhythm family
✅ Practice skills to improvise (with a live drummer, no less!)

🎶 Class tuition includes live percussion accompaniment.

🗓️ 8-week series starts Wednesday 5/6

“Maya” was the name of an Egyptian dancer in LA who inspired the name for this move!

*edited to correct my error saying that Maya means water in Arabic. See comment 🙏 thanks!

Some things to keep in mind:

1. Imagine you are moving between two panes of glass. Don’t twist the hips!

2. The pelvis will want to shift in between sides. Make sure you are holding the contraction in the obliques WHILE sliding over. This will give you the fullest shape.

3. The initiation can be upward on one side, but I prefer to think of it as diagonally in toward the center line. This gets the most juice out of the move.

And as always (say it with me) “bend your knees & drop your tailbone” ♥️👏

The three quarter shimmy! It’s a milestone in your raqs sharqi (belly dance) vocabulary and here’s how to do it!

Things that will keep you on track:
🥁The beat is in the step. If you get lost, come back to the swinging hip on the step

💪Use your obliques to lift the hip on the second movement (don’t use the foot or floor it will mess you up and prevent you from going faster)

💞Let the release of that 2nd move swing so that you can utilize some momentum coming into the step

✨ Very often this move will start from the obliques first (as a prep on the pick up because music does this too)

You will never be sorry you trained your balance and obliques! Once you got it, this pattern will come out everywhere 🥰

Have fun!
