I went into this book completely blind and had zero idea what I was getting into. Broken Country had some serious Maury Povich vibes (iykyk - the dramaaa 👀), but it also has really strong, immersive writing that kept me hooked.
The characters are messy, flawed, and oh, so human. Some you root for, some you side-eye hard and love to hate. I think the depth of the characters was the star of this story. The subject matter is really heavy at times, shocking at others, and one twist actually made me gasp out loud.
All in all I was very pleasantly surprised and genuinely couldn’t put it down.

Well this book took me by surprise! It had been sitting on my shelf for too long and I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner! It really left a mark on me.
Yara seemed to have a comfortable life: an education, a career, a family. But beneath the surface was a simmering sadness and anger, rooted in generational trauma and cultural expectations she could no longer ignore. When an impulsive act at work forced her into therapy, Yara began unraveling the past: her mother’s warnings of a family “curse” and her father’s and husband’s control. The “curse” her mother warns of isn’t something supernatural but rather the inheritance of generational pain and cultural expectations.
This book is heartbreaking and healing all at once. Etaf Rum writes with raw honesty and compassion, exploring identity, motherhood, and the resilience of women. Yara’s journey is both deeply specific and universally human: a powerful reminder that cycles can be broken, and healing is possible. And I have to say it: I absolutely could not stand her husband, Fadi... his passivity and lack of support made me want to scream. I was rooting for Yara the whole way through and in many ways could empathize with her feelings of being trapped. I listened to this on audio and it was a fantastic listen!

She Didn’t See It Coming was no exception. The best part (as always) was her cast of unlikeable characters, and I genuinely couldn’t put it down. But the ending I found lacklustre and too many side characters popped up with zero relevance in the end. I’m just not a big fan of withholding key information until the final few chapters.
Fast and entertaining in the moment and enjoyable as a quick, binge-y read, though! I’ll always pick up her books because they really are so fun.
Tom Lake follows Lara as she tells her three daughters the story of a summer in her past when she fell in love with a famous actor. This story is set during the pandemic on their family cherry orchard, and it’s all about memories and the way our past shapes our present.
I listened to the audiobook and it was incredible. Meryl Streep’s narration brought so much warmth and depth to the story. Come to think of it, Ann Patchett really scores big when it comes to narrators (her book The Dutch House was narrated by Tom Hanks!), and it makes her audiobooks a special experience.
This isn’t a fast-paced read, but that’s exactly what I loved about it and it’s really beautifully written. If you’re thinking of picking it up, I highly recommend the audiobook.

The writing is that spectacular. Bleak, yes, but incredible. Quite simply, this book forces you to look into the mirror that society holds up and see clearly all the expectations on women who are mothers and women who aren’t. It’s a disturbing and brutally honest view of motherhood, and the fears most, if not all, mothers and those thinking of becoming mothers face.
The POVs confused me a bit when I started to read, but it soon all fell into place and was smooth sailing.
As you can imagine, this book should only be read for those in the right headspace to do so. The emotional wallops to the heart were aplenty.

Better Than the Movies is exactly what I want in a YA romance: fun, heartfelt, and zero cringe. Liz’s love of rom-coms makes this such a playful read, but what really makes it shine is the balance of banter and genuinely sweet, swoony moments. It perfectly captures the magic of high school crushes, awkward but adorable first love, and the kind of friendship-to-romance chemistry that feels real. I also really enjoyed the chapter openings and Wes and Liz’s playlist on Spotify is such a clever touch! A book that leaves you smiling long after you close it 💕
I will say I also just finished the sequel, and I really, REALLY don’t think it needed to be written. It was kind of a huge buzzkill and also depressing.
So if you’re looking for a YA romance that’s light, witty, and actually better than the movies, it’s this one! 🎬✨
