In the war, Belchite was the site of a fierce battle between Republican and Nationalist forces from August 24 to September 7, 1937. The town was subjected to heavy bombing from Republican artillery and aircraft.
The Republicans eventually took the town after a prolonged and bloody siege that caused immense destruction. It is estimated that 4,800 soldiers died and over 6,000 were wounded. The town was almost entirely destroyed, with houses bombed and churches razed.
After the war and eventual nationalist victory, Francisco Franco ordered that the ruins be left untouched as a monument to the war. He then had a new town, Belchite Nuevo, built nearby, using over 2,000 Republican prisoners of war to construct it.
