Alliance for Choice Belfast are dismayed to learn that whilst hundreds have been able to access abortion locally year on year, dozens are still travelling to England for care that should be available locally, in what is an unnecessary and serious breach of their established rights.
During this period we had repeated collapses of local services, a lack of referral pathway between trusts, and a delayed implementation of surgical abortion. We are also aware of problems with the England based Central Booking System where patients are repeatedly misinformed of the law due to a confusion about the different laws in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, meaning people have been forced to travel for care that should have been available locally. We also note the high numbers of people traveling from Scotland and the Republic of Ireland due to lack of service provision and restrictive legislation respectively.
