“I shall now speak of another great moral quality taught by Islam, which is to fulfil the rights owed to one’s parents and the requirement to treat them in a kind and loving way. It is not simply enough to only give your mother a gift on Mother’s Day, as is the case today, but in fact we should strive to take care of our parents each day of our lives. We must consider their feelings in all matters and should not utter even a sigh or murmur in complaint if they say or do something that displeases us. We are indebted to our parents to such an extent that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught that it is impossible to fulfil the rights owed to our parents, no matter how hard we try. Islam teaches that amongst parents the highest rank has been awarded to the mother and so she has been granted the first right over a child. Then, the rights of a father have also been established, but they are secondary to those owed to a person’s mother. If we fairly assess and analyse, then it becomes obvious why our mothers are owed even greater rights than our fathers, because from the trials of pregnancy and labour, right up until we become adults, mothers have had to endure much greater levels of pain and suffering for the sake of their children. Thus, if we examine the status given to our mothers by Islam, then this example alone should be enough to refute the allegation that some people raise and that is that in Islam women are considered inferior to men.”

Part I, published in February 1894, demonstrates the unrivaled literary excellence of the Holy Quran and its true meanings concerning Jesus Christ in response to the vulgar, baseless attacks of Padre ‘Imad-ud-Din Lahiz, an ex-Muslim-turned-Christian missionary. Scarcely a month after its publication—and three years after Hazrat Ahmad claimed to be the Mahdi—the very lunar and solar eclipses that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) foretold as a Sign of the Mahdi’s advent, occurred on 21 March and 6 April, respectively. Part II, published in May 1894, addresses these long-prophesied celestial Signs and refutes objections made by Muslim critics like Shaikh Muhammad Husain of Batala to the hadith conveying the prophecy. Composed of miraculous Arabic prose and several eloquent odes, The Light of Truth is a passionate plea for Muslims to return to the path of righteousness, and a decisive response to numerous Christian allegations against the Holy Quran. We believe that the crucifixion of Jesus (as) was an attempt made on his life, like any attempted murder. Crucifixion was only the weapon used in that murderous attempt. However, the attempt to crucify him failed in inflicting death. This is tantamount to saying that they failed to crucify him. When we say this, we express ourselves exactly as we would in any other case of attempted murder. If an attempt is made on someone’s life and the attempt fails, it cannot be said that the intended victim was murdered. For instance, if such an attempt is made with a sword, and the attempt fails, no one can say that the intended victim was put to the sword. So we believe, as Muslims, that only an attempt to murder Jesus (as) was made: crucifixion being the instrument of the attempted murder. After a few hours of intense suffering upon the cross, before death could overtake him, he was taken down from the cross in a state of deep coma from which he was revived later on. As no state can permit a person who is condemned to death legal cover and protection if he somehow escapes execution, so also under the Roman law, no immunity could be extended to Jesus (as) beyond the point of his crucifixion. That provided Jesus (as) with enough cause to escape from the Roman territory to a land of freedom. But he also had to perform a commission and had a prophecy to fulfil. There were those lost sheep of Israel, who after their exodus under the Babylonian and Roman invasion scattered in many eastern lands and were awaiting his ministry…

However, one should not fast on this day. One should take a shower, wear good clothes, perfume and offer Eid prayer in congregation which is offered in an open area or the mosque before the sun begins to set. Hazrat Anas (ra) narrates, “The Messenger (sa) of Allah never proceeded [for the prayer] on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates.” He also relates that, “The Holy Prophet (sa) used to eat an odd number of dates.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Eidain)
Hazrat Jabir (ra) bin Abdullah relates, “On the day of Eid, the Holy Prophet (sa) used to return [after offering the Eid prayer] using a different route from that which he went by.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Eidain)
How is Eid prayer offered?
In the first rakat [unit of prayer] of Eid-ul-Fitr, after reciting thanaa, the imam says 7 takbirat [Allahu Akbar] in a loud voice before commencing with the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah. The imam and followers should raise their hands to their ears and drop them at each time. After the takbirat, ta‘awuz and bismillah, the imam recites Surah al-Fatihah and a portion of the Holy Quran aloud and completes the rakat as is the sunnah.
On the second rakat, instead of 7, the imam says 5 takbirat and then completes the second rakat as mentioned above. The imam delivers a sermon after the Eid prayer as is delivered before the Jumuah prayer.
Hazrat Abdullah (ra) bin Umar narrates, “The Holy Prophet (sa) used to offer the prayer of Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr and used to deliver the khutba after the prayer.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Eidain)
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (ra) narrates, “The Holy Prophet (sa) offered a two-rakat prayer on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr and did not pray before or after it. Then he went towards women along with Bilal (ra) and asked them to pay alms and so they started offering their earrings and necklaces [in charity].” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Eidain)
