The 15th century Venetian crown jewel with its spectacular Neo-Gothic facade reawakened as a true masterpiece.

When I first stepped into Palazzo Dona Giovannelli, I encountered beauty in unprecedented ways. Fragments of past galore, whispering walls, and the lost colors of mythology. The “colori persi” suite is named after the 16th-century pigment appelation and poetic lore, meaning “lost colors.” Not gone, but rediscovered. Faded fragments of myth and memory, brought forward with modern intention.
In this luminous corner suite, Venice is retold in color through hues we almost forgot we knew. The salon opens in a wash of light. Above the canopy bed dressed to embrace history, Eugenio Moretti Larese’s 1860 ceiling unfurls in NeoRococo splendor.

The journey starts in Riyad through the mystical Arabian desert crossing the wonders of Al Ula, Madain Saleh, Al Jouf, into the rich tapestry of the kingdom’s cultural heritage.
In the curated wagons, every detail is thoughtfully considered. Rich wood marquetry, plush sandy velvets adorned with traditional trimmings, engraved glass and tinted mirrors, compose a visual palette that speaks to the desert’s quiet opulence. Infinite perspectives expand the voyage lit by the whimsical´nafous’, the reinterpreted Saudi lanterns, casting a cinematic glow. A gentle light, never too bright, to whisper below the desert stars.

« I didn’t want to impose a new vision but instead rediscover the energy already present, explains on transforming Palazzo Donà Giovannelli into the new, which includes 47 guest rooms, six suites, and two apartment-style units. D’Amman revived original features of the historic space while enlivening the hotel by adding richly figured marbles, plush velvets, bright silks, and burnished brass—a palette that evokes the golden age of rail travel.

From the storied marbles of Basilica San Marco to the intricate pavements of Ca’ d’Oro floors, I tried to invoke the spirit of place into the bath salons of Palazzo Dona Giovannelli, a place of ritual and quietness reflecting on the Serenissima’s enduring romance with stone, sculpted and pleated like architectural forms.
“Je me sens décharné de toute la planète, sauf de Venise, sauf de Saint-Marc, mosquée dont le pavement déclive et boursouflé ressemble à des tapis de prière juxtaposés”, Paul Morand.

is named for the cherubs that run across its walls, recalling that Venetian grandeur has always made room for joy. High along the walls, a rediscovered frieze by Sebastiano Santi runs like a ribbon: dancing putti, women playing ancient instruments, movement caught mid-song. Above it, another layer of renaissance faces crowns the space with wisdom and poetry.
I wanted to respond to these multiple layers of history with a thoughtful intervention, embracing the legacy and adding character with a contemporary approach. A new interior architecture is brought to the room respecting the visual continuity of the frieze and ceiling crown. A modern grafting within the space that evokes the idea of giant trunks dedicated to host a dressing room, a bath salon, and let the living room unfold with grace. The theatrical gesture is not only functional, encompassing all the technical needs to transform an empty historical salon, once only furnished with lose elements. It elevates the space into a truly inhabited and spectacular suite, embracing its heritage and giving it a new lease of life.
A node to the Orient Express realm, these extra-large trunks are treated like wonder cabinets, underlined with wood marquetry and brass inserts, embellished with etched mirrors that reflect the surrounding historical features. Permeated with crafted details recalling the 1930s distinctive atmosphere, they host outstanding vintage Venetian finds and objets d’art that spark imagination.
The contemporary seating specially crafted for the palazzo’s interior welcomes nowness and modern comfort while moiré silky richly padded walls evoke the laguna’s rippling waters movement playing with Murano chandeliers in a quiet sense of theatre.
The bathroom is treated like a ‘salons de bain’, its exquisite marbles in dialog with the Cherubini frescoes are a node to Venice’s enduring romance with
stone, sculpted and pleated like architectural forms.

Arriving by boat, guests enter Palazzo Donà Giovannelli, transformed into the new Orient Express Venezia hotel, through the Gothic-arched portal on the water and step into a grand lobby of tall columns, flowing curtains, and expressive light.
Upstairs, the piano nobile unfolds through historic rooms, from the Hall of Culture to the Salone Vittoria, where centuries of history remain present in every detail.

Original frescoes and floors, including terrazzo and mosaic, have been carefully restored, while paneling and gilding were revived with their patinas preserved. Imperfections left by time remain visible, becoming part of the building’s character.
