Die vom Verein der Freunde des Rohkunstbau e.V. in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für aktuelle Kunst (ZAK) in der Zitadelle Spandau initiierte Ausstellung zeigt zeitgenössische Kunst von Berliner Künstlerinnen und Künstlern und ist ein emotionales Statement des ästhetischen Widerstandes und der Hoffnung auf eine menschenwürdige Weltgesellschaft.
Der Titel der von dem Berliner Kunsthistoriker Christoph Tannert kuratierten Schau, geht auf einen Song des kanadischen Singer-Songwriters Ron Sexsmith zurück, der auf der LP „Hermitage“ von 2020 zu finden ist. Dort heißt es:
“Even when the news seems very bad – Gotta stay strong On your belief it all depends – Whatever shape your heart is in - Whatever shape your heart is in – Just start again. The battle must be fought again –“

Women are here to be contradictory, inconvenient, unmanageable.
Women are here to be powerful as stone, marble, and bronze—
and soft, leaking, fluid like water, sweat, blood, tears, milk.
All of it at once or non. No explaining.
Women are not here to fit into a mold designed for them.
Nor to be corrected, refined, or made presentable.
Women are free—
from the ruins of inherited stories and myths, from the architecture of restraint, even while masking as adoration.
A year of hope, of guilt, of ache and light.
A year of nightmares, as the world around us continues to darken.
And one of resilience— so it seems in retrospect.
A year of almost losing you.
The scariest thing that ever happened to me.
And of learning how to hold space for joy—
the kind not built on survival.
The “what ifs” lingered, low and persistent and shrunk me.
But being fully here with you,
they lost their grip.
Allowing your smile to dissolve anxiety.
A year of finding my breath and joy again with you.
A year of one new brain developing,
and another desperately trying to restore some of its cells.
A year of sighing in the kitchen and moaning getting up, of rusty knees and sore nipples. A year of frantic clapping and random singing.
A year of small changes that feel big:
here, a laugh—was that a word?
She said MAMA.
A year of big changes that are so overwhelming that they almost feel mute:
my body, my art, my femininity, my social life.
A year of everything slow.
Repetitive. Early. Mundane. Close to the ground.
My eyes always on you, my body next to yours,
my hand clearing a dark strand from your seeking eye,
my hand ready to catch your fall.
For your birthday I would like to surround you with hundreds of flowers,
meat, broccoli and strawberries (your favourites).
And I would also like to sleep a while,
or maybe just have a nice good cry in the bathtub.
But I smile.
I smile all the time.
And you return a smile. Always.
