“Gulon Mein Rang Bhare” by Faiz Ahmed Faiz is often read as a romantic poem. But it was written in prison, and the flowers in it can also be read as symbols of a world beyond the reach of someone longing for freedom.

For 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨, Ali Monis Naqvi brings together photographs of flowers he has made over the years to create a small gulistan, a garden. Through these flowers, he thinks about freedom and beauty, and about political prisoners, young students and activists whose lives have been irreversibly changed.

At the centre of the work is a photograph of the hand of Umar Khalid, taken during the anti-CAA/NRC protests in Delhi in 2019. Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and remains in prison, without trial, six years later.

Very honoured to be amongst ‘15 most promising emerging photographers from across the world’ compiled by British Journal of Photography ‘Ones to Watch’

‘There is a deceptive simplicity to Ali's visual storytelling that belies the weight and complexily of the subject that he is exploring. Across his work, it is his focus on the everyday world that surrounds us - a universe that often passes us by unnoticed, of people and place - that demands that we slow down, pause and look.
In the frenetic world in which we live, this is a rare gift indeed.’ -Iona Fergusson

Special thanks to ♥️
