ICYMI: Shawn & I are travelling full time for a year beginning in Nicaragua. Follow our travel account here:
We have been quietly making some big life changes and because of the instability of the pandemic have held off sharing the news until now. We are spending the next year travelling full time & working on the road beginning in the beautiful country of Nicaragua!
Last summer we sat on a picnic blanket by the beach writing a list of all the countries we wanted to visit, slotting quick visits here and there between vacation days, and realized that’s not how we wanted to see the world. We realized we wanted to explore slowly, mindfully, and not take long flights roundtrip that amount to huge amounts of carbon emissions for 1-2 week vacations a couple times a year.
By the fall we decided that we were both at points in our lives and our careers where we could step away for a year and decided to start looking more seriously at travelling full time.
By December, we had given notice on our place and bought a one way ticket, thinking the worst of the pandemic was behind us and that international travel would be in full swing by 2022.
When Omicron hit, we were faced with incredible uncertainty but decided we were committed to diving into the deep end and rolling with the punches. We got boosted, got tested, and gave ourselves plenty of flexibility and time for Plan B’s and C’s.
6 months later from that picnic in the park, we boarded a flight and are beginning life on the road.
This account might look a bit different for the next year but it won’t be our main account sharing travel content. If you would like to follow along our travelling journey, follow along here: 💛
This project set a lot of other ideas for photo essays and personal projects in motion that I’m really excited to work on next year.
Creativity comes in waves. If you’re at a low point right now, I promise it’s not forever. Wishing you all a creative & fulfilling 2022 💫
Here’s an excerpt from the story I photographed & wrote:
Ryme Lahcene is the founder of Takeover Skateboarding, which organizes meetups, events and informal mentorships for women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and two-spirit folks at skate parks around the city. The organization’s goal is to claim space for underrepresented groups in the skateboarding community.
“All my life I thought I couldn’t skate because I had never really seen anyone like me skate,” Lahcene said. “When I was first starting, I really felt like I was taking up space because I was slower, I was learning to push, and I really felt like I was in the way, but actually I wasn’t. I was allowed as much as anyone else to occupy the spaces.”
Link to full story in bio 💛
The link to their conversation is in my bio, please take some time to read it. Here’s an excerpt from Shellene and Stephanie’s conversations:
“My middle name, Marie, comes from a young girl because my mum used to braid her hair. Every morning, everybody had to take care of somebody. But one day, she just didn’t show up. And nobody told my mum anything. No one ever spoke of her and Mum never knew what happened to her, but she just never came back. She always remembered her. So when I was born, she named me after the little girl she used to take care of.
It’s those kinds of events that shouldn’t happen at a school. No other schools have graveyards. No other schools basically beat the language out of the children, getting hot water thrown on them, getting their mouth washed out with soap and all the other horrible things that would have happened.”
While taking photos in front of Shellene’s favourite building in her community, she raised her hands to give thanks. When I asked her what prompted her to do that, she told me, “I was giving thanks for the day, for being here, for building bridges, and for sharing our stories to build collective understanding of what happened.”

I had the privilege of spending the past few months adventuring with the 10 incredible humans who are featured in this photo essay. They complicate representations of who belongs in the outdoors and invite their communities to do the same by sharing tools and access. We climbed, we kayaked, we hiked, we (me) tried to balance on rocks in the ocean with two cameras and not fall in and ran after mountain bikes… and it was such a fun experience. Thank you to everyone involved for inviting me along on these awesome activities, for being such incredible leaders, and for changing how so many see and interact with outdoor activities/the natural world in general.
This photo essay was made possible by the Room Up Front Photojournalism Fellowship and the incredible support of many people. Thank you to for making an incredible mentorship program that allowed me to apply for this fellowship, thank you for creating this fellowship and to for supporting this process, and lastly, thank you to my incredible and generous mentor who I cannot thank enough. You have taught me so much. 💕
In light of a photo essay shot exclusively on grassy areas of parks and backyards, my reel is staying on brand.
