As the sun sets on Yom HaShoah in Israel, I find myself looking back at a few photographs from the past two years of March of the Living, especially those that capture the intersection between Holocaust survivors and survivors of October 7.

Having met and photographed so many Holocaust and Oct 7 survivors, it is clear that there are very few people in this world who can truly relate and understand the weight of what they have endured.

These images, made during March of the Living in 2024 and 2025, reflect that intersection and the fight that was bringing the remaining hostages home.

Last week, for the first time since March 1st, Mazal Amrani returned to Beit Shemesh to stand amongst the destruction from the place that she had been rescued from.

Amrani, came back to the street she had not seen since just before 2 p.m. that day, when sirens warning of incoming Iranian ballistic missiles sent her and her husband, along with neighbors, running to the underground bomb shelter under the synagogue, only steps away from their home.

Minutes later, a 500-kilogram missile struck, destroying the synagogue and collapsing part of the shelter’s roof. Nine people were killed and dozens more were injured. Among the dead were Amrani’s neighbors and friends.

These photos follow her first visit back to see what is left, accompanied by her husband, Avi Ohana. In the first image, Amrani hugs a neighbor, whose relatives were also killed in the strike. They are standing beside the destroyed synagogue and bomb shelter on the right, with what remains of Mazal’s home behind her.

Humbled beyond words to have several of my photos included and recognized alongside so many incredible photojournalists in TIME’s Top 100 Photos of 2023, TIME Yearbook Magazine, PEOPLE Year in Photos, PEOPLE Yearbook, The Times UK, and others. My sincerest gratitude to the photo editors at TIME, People, Times UK, and other photo editors around the world.

I am beyond lucky to work alongside such outstanding and talented photojournalists, many of whom I am grateful to call friends. Thank you for constantly challenging, exciting, and helping me to become a better photographer and journalist every day. Thanking them all individually would take days, but you know who you are - my deepest and heartfelt gratitude.

For almost three months now, I’ve had the incredible privilege of covering the Israel-Hamas war, and almost all of these photos are a result of that coverage. Thank you and for trusting me and providing every possible resource to help me succeed and flourish.

To my other assignment editors from NY, Australia, LA, UK, France, and Asia at, with whom I have had the privilege of working this year, thank you for trusting me to cover such important and meaningful stories. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t express my gratitude to my desk editors and all the other editors at Getty who consistently handle my photos, provide valuable feedback, challenge me to do better, and manage my photos when transmitting live, sometimes in the most hectic moments.

Finally, thank you to everyone in 2023 whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with, meeting, and capturing this year. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the countless individuals and subjects who have opened up to me, allowing me to tell their stories—whether in the happiest or most difficult moments of their lives.

Here’s to an all that 2024 brings and a new set of highs and lows to capture.
