You can predict how many segments are inside a citrus fruit. šŸŠšŸ‹ā€šŸŸ©

explains how citrus fruits develop from the ovaries of citrus flowers. Those ovaries contain multiple distinct sections called locules, and each locule develops into its own segment inside the fruit. By peeling back the tiny stem remaining on the fruit, you can see exactly where each locule connected to the tree. Count those dots and you have your segment count!

Just joyfully sorting microfossils at. The Tar Pits are my absolute favorite place in LA: I have a membership, I bring every out of town visitor, and I have a clear favorite exhibit (the sloth skin bones!) They’ll be closing for two years for renovations in July, so I was so excited to get a little behind-the-scenes visit last night before they go. I’ve watched through the lab fishbowl on countless visits as scientists clean large fossils and sort microfossils so it was truly so much fun to get to do it myself! So impressed by the actual scientists who sort this stuff every day and can immediately tell the difference between tiny shells and bones and rocks and seed pods and insect bits. The video on the second slide is my little collection of California Juniper seed pods from around 30,000 years ago!
Had a truly informative day with and for this year’s Day at the Capitol. The CA Junior League advocates for legislation in five areas: health, education, family support, violence prevention, and anti-human trafficking. Getting to hear directly from legislators, speak with their staff, and learn how the delegates choose the legislation to support was fascinating and incredibly educational. I don’t get a lot of opportunity in my career to interface with this part of the political and legislative process, and it makes getting involved feel much more approachable and possible. A huge thank you to the and the Centennial Committee for sponsoring our trip! #calspac #juniorleague #womensupportingwomen
I’ve spent the past three months making leather out of eggshells so I could make a tiny leather jacket for an egg and talk about dinosaurs. I don’t know how we got here either. But please go check it out on the YouTube page!

You can light up an LED with the change in your pocket. šŸ’”

shows how stacking coins with salt and vinegar soaked paper towels creates a simple voltaic pile, where alternating metals and electrolytes generate a small electric current. As more layers are added, the voltage builds until it can light an LED. This demonstrates how early batteries converted chemical energy into electricity. Try it yourself and see how many coins it takes to power your light.

shows how a simple solar updraft tower uses heat energy from a lamp to warm the air inside a black paper cone, causing that air to rise and spin a small propeller. As hot air escapes through the top, cooler air is pulled in through the bottom openings, creating a continuous airflow that demonstrates how solar energy can be converted into motion and, in larger systems, renewable electricity.
