With that vision in mind, four friends set out onto the Greenland Ice Cap. None of us had ever been there before, and we were alone. A helicopter dropped us in the middle of nowhere and flew away, leaving behind an overwhelming silence.
What we discovered was astonishing. Massive rivers, formed by melting ice, flowed in an intense shade of blue, breaking the monotony of the white, frozen landscape. And yes, those rivers had powerful rapids, constantly shifting as the water carved through the ice beneath.
We could hardly believe what lay ahead.
Paddling on those rivers was an experience like no other—more than just kayaking, it felt as if we were levitating over the frozen expanse.
That first expedition proved to us that there are still uncharted frontiers in our sport. What followed is captured in the film Ice Waterfalls, which tells the full story.

We didn’t have much time as we were focused on the ice mission, so the last day of the trip we went to check the closest river, on one side of the Austfonna glacier.
We could just kayak the last 2,5km as the upper section was covered by the ice, but what we found showed that this islands have some very interesting whitewater potential.
I wouldn’t have expected to find such good river so close to the north pole, but this is just another evidence of how fast everything is changing out there...
Now we can say that we have paddled the first river in Svalbard, but hopefully we can comeback one day to explore some more interesting stuff!!
