I wrote this story in exile — surrounded by silence, fear, and the echoes of airstrikes in my mind. Every day, I followed the news with a trembling heart, watching loved ones vanish — one by one.
With shaking hands and unbearable grief, I wrote for my friend Shahad, her family, and the countless others still missing, still silenced, still trapped in the grey of uncertainty.
This book is not just a collection — It’s a historical record, a cry for justice, a refusal to be erased. It carries our truth. Our grief. Our resistance.
My story is for Shahad, my sister in soul. For her laughter, her light, and the haunting grey that replaced her.
It’s for Gaza.
Our Gaza.
A city reduced to rubble and ghosts.
This book is dedicated to all I’ve lost in this genocide— my uncle Muhannad, my grandmother Mariam, my young brother Khaled, my friends Ibraheem, Rushdi, Walaa, Farizah, Mohammed, Yousef, Hamo, Wafaa, Mahmoud, Reefi, Osamah — and to 50,000 souls, each by their name.
And to those still breathing under bombs —especially my father, still holding on to live in a place where life is under siege.
This book is for Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, our mentor, our poet, our lighthouse, murdered for his words.
He once wrote: “If I must die, you must live to tell my story.”

لطالما كرهت اللون الرمادي، لون غير واضح وغير مفهوم. أبيض او أسود، سعادة او حُزن، حُب او كره، ضحك او بُكاء، نور او ظلام، حياة او موت. غير مفهوم ولا ملامح له، وانا أكثر ما لا أحبّه في الحياة هو عدم الوضوح والمصير والنتيجة الغير مفهومة بتاتًا.
سمعت كثيرًا في حياتي بأن الجثث تتحلل بعد دفنها واكرام الميت دفنه بالتأكيد وكُلما عُجّل بهذا الدفن كنّا قد اكرمناه وأحببناه ونُلقي سلام الوداعِ الأخير وقبلةً على هذا الجبين او حتّى النظرة الأخيرة لعلَّ اللقاء الأخر يكون في جنة الله ونعيمة. لكن أن تأتي الحُرب وتصبح الجثث متناثرة وملقاة في الشوارع على الأرصفة والطُرقات وأسطح المنازل وفي الغُرف وركام المنازل وفي كُل مكان، منهم ما تحلل ومنهم مازال الجسد على ماهو عليه، سمعت عن هذا كثيرًا في هذه الحرب، سمعت وشاهدت مُجبره هذه المشاهد، لكنّي والله ما كُنت أخشاه هو هذا اللون الرمادي يا رفيقتي.
شهر ديسمبر الذي من المفترض تبدأ الأحلام به خَسرت فيه كُل أحلامي ورفَاقُ رُوحي وهو من أثقل الأشهر على قلبي. ان يخطف الاحتلال احدى الرفاق من “الممر الأمن” وأن يُقتل خالي وابنة خالي وبعد اسابيع يُفقد الاتصال مع صديقتي وعائلتها عند اجتياح الاحتلال للمنطقة وبعد أكثر من شهر تبدأ كُل السيناريوهات.
تكثُر السيناريوهات ولكن يرفُض العقل والقلب فكرة الرحيل، صاروخًا واحدًا يُنهي حياة الكثير قد يكون مقصود ومنهم قد يكون اصلًا عشوائيًا بغرض القتل فقط وهذه فكرة الاحتلال دائمًا. اما سيناريو الاجتياح واقتحام المنزل وإعدام من فيه او الغالبية وبعد الانسحاب يقوموا اهل المنطقة بإيجاد في المنزل ثلاثة من الجثث متحلله من اصل 7 أشخاص (صديقتي وعائلتها) كانوا يقطنون المنزل، ومحاولة معرفة هوية الجثث من الشعر المتبقي او الحلق والاساور او الهواتف الملقاة بجانبهم هي فكرة لو تقسم لهذا العقل بهذا الرحيل لينكره دومًا ويرفضه. هل صديقتي منهم؟ ام هل هؤلاء اخوتها؟ أين باقي الجثث؟ هل قتلوا جميعًا؟ هل منهم من أعتقل؟ هل أُعدِمَ الجميع؟ أين صديقتي؟
والله ما يخافه قلبي أن يكون المتبقيين قد سرق الاحتلال جثثهم وتم دفنهم مجهولي الهوية، والله هذا الرحيل والفقد صعب، والله صعب ف كيف لقلبي الذي سيبقى طيلة حياته الان يبحث عن سراب؟

We really love life, feeling home and safe! We love Gaza and we really enjoyed being Gazan, we were happy even If most of the time there was no electricity or water but we were really thankful and pleased for everything. We love our beach, home, streets, sky, restaurants, weddings and people. We really used to love and be pleased for everything around us. I’m happy that I got the chance to visit Gaza last year as I’m sure now that all those pictures that I took I won’t recognize the places if I visits Gaza again. They boomed everything, they left nothing, they killed our people, our friends, they boomed the streets, buildings, trees they even boomed the beach and they made our beautiful sky be grey! But we love Gaza, we will always love Gaza and we won’t give up even if everything will be gone. If we got the chance to move now now to Gaza and stay between our families under the attack, believe me we won’t think twice and we will go there without thinking about anything.
I love my family, my friends, my home and my land. I love Gaza والله and I miss our Gaza. I don’t think if I will be able to love this life again, but what I’m sure about is that I love Gaza.

Hayatı gerçekten seviyorduk, kendimizi evimizde ve güvende hissediyoruz! Gazze'yi seviyoruz ve Gazzeli olmaktan gerçekten keyif aldık, çoğu zaman elektrik ve su olmasa da mutluyduk ama her şeye gerçekten şükrediyor ve memnun oluyorduk. Sahilimizi, evimizi, sokaklarımızı, gökyüzünü, restoranlarımızı, düğünlerimizi ve insanlarımızı seviyoruz. Geçen yıl Gazze'yi ziyaret etme şansı bulduğum için mutluyum çünkü artık Gazze'ye bir daha gidersem çektiğim o fotoğrafların hiçbirini tanıyamayacağıma eminim. Her şeyi bombaladılar, hiçbir şey bırakmadılar, insanlarımızı, dostlarımızı öldürdüler, sokakları, binaları, ağaçları bombaladılar, sahili bile bombaladılar ve güzel gökyüzümüzü griye boyadılar! Ama Gazze'yi her zaman seveceğiz. Şimdi Gazze'ye taşınma ve saldırı altında ailelerimizin arasında kalma şansımız olsa inanın hiç düşünmeyiz ve hiçbir şey düşünmeden oraya gideriz.
Gazze'mizi özlüyorum. Bu hayatı bir daha sevebilecek miyim sanmıyorum ama şundan eminim ki Gazze'yi seviyorum.
