Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II hosted a ceremony at the landmark at 6 p.m., lighting it in the sorority’s official colors to mark the convention’s arrival and honor Alpha Kappa Alpha’s more than century-long legacy of service, scholarship, and sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha dignitaries and leadership were on hand for the occasion, including International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed.
The illumination set the stage for a week of activity at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Convention Center, where the Boule runs July 18 through July 24. Members will gather for business meetings, leadership sessions, and celebrations, alongside major service projects that include packing 15,000 weekend meals for food insecure children and a Guinness World Records attempt for Most People Assembling Hunger Relief Packages.
“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been a cornerstone of service and leadership for more than a century, and we are proud to welcome its members to Clark County,” McCurdy said in a statement.
“This special illumination honors the Sorority’s 118-year legacy of service, sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership, and warmly welcomes members traveling from around the world to Southern Nevada,” Reed said.
For a sorority founded on service to all mankind, the pink-and-green glow over Las Vegas Boulevard offered a fitting welcome to a week built around giving back to the community now hosting it.

The week brings together the sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha for community service, leadership and educational sessions, business meetings, and celebrations of the organization’s history, all under the leadership of International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed.
Beyond the sorority’s business meetings and internal proceedings, the week is built around service. On Sunday, July 19, thousands of members will combat food insecurity and support families with infants across Southern Nevada, packing 15,000 weekend meals for unhoused children and teens, assembling mother-and-baby care kits, and donating more than 250,000 diapers to 4Kira4Moms, a maternal health advocacy organization. The meal-packing effort will double as a Guinness World Records attempt for Most People Assembling Hunger Relief Packages, with more than 2,000 members assembling 15,000 CHIPP (Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack) bags for donation to Project 150 and the Clark County School District.

The Alpha Delta Psi Omega Chapter becomes Alpha Kappa Alpha’s fourth graduate chapter on the African continent, joining chapters in Liberia, South Africa, and Nigeria. More than two dozen women worked for two years to establish the chapter, representing professional backgrounds in medicine, law, business, education, fashion, and more. Their efforts have already created a strong Alpha Kappa Alpha presence across Accra, Kumasi, Aburi, and Koforidua.
International Regional Director Carrie J. Clark reflected on the impact of the chapter’s work, stating, “The work I have witnessed my sisters accomplish in Ghana is awe-inspiring. I visited with them a year ago and watched their interactions with community members and children. The care and love that they display are undeniable.” She later added, “These ladies have done a wonderful job of creating Alpha Kappa Alpha’s presence in Ghana through service that is thoughtful and meaningful.”
The chapter has already implemented several service initiatives, including donating more than 800 children’s books and school supplies, mentoring students through the Youth Leadership Initiative, supporting local business owners through the Pull Up and Pitch experience, planting coconut seedlings with children, and promoting wellness among aging community members. These efforts are carried out in partnership with local organizations and align with Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood, the international program led by International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed.

According to a the New York City Council’s website, the resolution, sponsored by two proud Alpha Kappa Alpha members—Speaker Adrienne Adams and Majority Leader Amanda Farías —celebrates the sorority’s enduring commitment to service, scholarship, and uplifting communities across New York City and beyond.
“As a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, initiated at Spelman College, I am delighted to co-sponsor this resolution,” said Speaker Adams. “Being a member of the first Sorority for college-educated Black women has been pivotal in shaping my path—particularly in becoming the first Black Speaker of the New York City Council.”
She continued, “The tenets of Alpha Kappa Alpha have empowered my life’s journey by breaking barriers and blazing trails, just as it has for generations of women before me. I am profoundly honored to support the perpetual recognition of my historic Sisterhood.”
Majority Leader Amanda Farías echoed the sentiment: “It is an honor to stand with Speaker Adrienne Adams—my Sister in Alpha Kappa Alpha—in co-sponsoring this resolution. For more than a century, Alpha Kappa Alpha has advanced education, civil rights, and service through programs that change lives.”
