Everywhere we went, people said, “She has such human eyes.” And you really did. Eyes full of thought, compassion, love. You knew your people by name - your mom, your grandparents, cousins, friends - and would run to find them when I asked. Funnily enough, you never really had a name for me. Maybe because I was just your person. And you were my shadow, my little guardian.
You were raised to speak up, and ohhh you spoke loudly. You danced after meals, scolded me for dancing (somehow it was fine when danced though - I guess you had good taste!), spoke to us through your buttons, and somehow always found the headrest in every room - a knee, foot, stair, pillow, piano pedal…
You tasted the world. Pumpkin pancakes, chicken and rice, even prime rib on super special days. You saw more of the world than most people do. Long walks, hikes, road trips, flights - where we went, you went. Home wasn’t New York or Nashville. Home was us.
Then came the diagnosis. Aggressive T-cell lymphoma. They said the odds were small and the cost high. We were told we’d have to make “an adult decision.” But there was no decision to make. You were our first daughter. For six months we drove to Long Island for chemo, and somehow you bounced back - playing fetch, smiling, dancing at our wedding, lighting up the room like the little star you were.
You made it further than anyone thought - our miracle. You came to Lancaster when your mom was in Cats, walked me to pick up your mom after every show, tail wagging, eyes bright, always excited to meet new friends.
When remission ended, you were so brave. It was hard when you wouldn’t eat - we tried everything and I was so relieved when your stomach settled even as your legs failed. You ate like a queen your last week.
I’m heartbroken. But I like to think you lived 4X as much life in half the time you deserved.
Thank you for changing our lives for the better. I love you forever. ❤️ Dad
