***And apologies for the typos on the days!! Edits didn’t save my edits 🥲 All the days after day 10 should be shifted down from Day 11 to 16 not 15! This is a 2 week + 2 day itinerary but you could do it in 2 weeks alone if you combine your huacachina and paracas tours into one LONG day trip (we don’t recommend it).
Without further ado, let’s get into it! If you’re planning your first trip to Peru and feeling overwhelmed, this the route that balances all the mountain and ocean adventures perfectly.
We started in Cusco + the Sacred Valley to properly acclimate, then tackled Salkantay while our energy was high. Finishing the trek at Machu Picchu felt well earned and set the tone for the rest of the trip!
After the mountains, we slowed things down with the desert + coast (Huacachina, Nazca, Paracas) and wrapped it all up in Lima eating our way through the city.
Why this itinerary works for first-timers:
• You acclimate before doing anything intense
• You save your energy for Salkantay
• You avoid rushing between regions
• You end with lower altitude + great food (your body will thank you)
Here’s our high-level route:
Cusco → Sacred Valley → Salkantay Trek → Machu Picchu → Rainbow Mountain → Lima → Huacachina → Nazca → Paracas → Lima
Would I change anything?
If you have 3–5 extra days, I’d add:
• Arequipa (2–3 days) for architecture + Colca Canyon
• Lake Titicaca (2 days) if you want a quieter, cultural stop
This trip was a mix of hard days, early mornings (2am for rainbow mountain sunrise LOL), and some of the best memories I’ve ever made and I’d recommend this flow to anyone seeing Peru for the first time.

And I’m joking about the difficulty…It was not actually hard but this desert oasis was one of the coolest places and i have ever hiked!
The reason you hear whirring in the background is that everyone else is smart and pays for a tour guide / dune buggy up, while we tried to save every dollar by hiking. It felt like we were taking two steps backwards every time we stepped forwards 😂
This was also the first time I’d ever hiked with a bin bag instead of backpack to avoid getting sand in every crevice of my hiking gear. To this day I still haven’t gotten the sand out of my shoes. Was this worth it? Absolutely 🤩
Make sure to leave no trace because we saw soo much trash blowing around in the sand dunes 😢

This is Part 5 of my Salkantay Trek series so if you want to see what the journey was actually like, check out my previous posts:)
Tbh the guided tour Salkantay trek feels like luxury, but without it, it’s pretty hard to logistically accomplish. The hike’s still hard at altitude, if I had the choice I’d actually carry my own belongings without a porter.
There’s so much I learned on this trek that you only know from experience so I want to share so you can be prepared and not learn the hard way 😅 keep in mind every tour company might be slightly different!
PACKING LIST ➡️ If you want the full packing list in the carousel with gear recs, COMMENT below and I’ll send it to you.
OTHER TIPS ⬇️
• The water provided by the cooks is filtered and safe and so much effort goes into this. I didn’t use an extra filter I brought
• Share items whenever you can like shampoo, sanitizer, sunscreen, bug spray.
• Plan for all seasons. Day 1 you’re bundled in a puffer, shell, gloves, and toque in the alpine and by the last day you’re sweating in a t-shirt in the jungle.
• pack snacks because what they give you isn’t enough
• Your daypack can’t be too big. Machu Picchu has strict bag size limits
• Bring your own sleeping bag liner. I’d also bring my own sleeping bag next time. We actually negotiated and got all our rentals for free including hiking poles, sleeping bag, liner, and upgraded mattress.
• Save 1 clean outfit for Aguas Calientes - you’ll want clean clothes after the hot shower at the end
• Before the trek, your luggage is stored at a large facility. On the last day it’s a bit chaotic getting everything back into your suitcase on the street
• no one wears shorts in South America!
• Bring change in soles for tips, snacks, bathrooms, & hot springs.
• Hiking boots were overkill for me. They asked us to bring runners too and I changed into them after day 1

In November I had the chance to lead a women’s only group trip to Peru and it was one of the best experiences in my life (and I would love you to join me next time!!)
I came back with sooo many tips stories to tell you including what I’ll detail below so send this to your travel buddy and keep reading! ⬇️
Everyone shares this iconic postcard photo, but very few people talk about how nuanced visiting Machu Picchu actually is, especially once tickets, circuits, time slots, weather, and transport are involved.
Here’s the story of what actually happened to us behind the scenes ⤵️
A few months before our trip, Kerry and I discovered our tour guide accidentally booked us Circuit 3 for the 6-9am entry, which does not include the classic postcard viewpoint.
Circuit 2 (the most popular circuit with the best mix of viewpoints + ruins) was completely sold out online. This was so disappointing 😭 Fortunately because we discovered this ahead before our trip, through back channels, managed to secure Circuit 2 tickets for 9-12pm later that same morning.
The day we had been anticipating finally comes. It was rainy season and completely foggy when we entered zero visibility (see the carousel for realistic pictures!) We still went ahead and toured circuit 3B in complete fog at 6am, but all of a sudden at 8:30am the fog lifted, just in time for our Circuit 2 tour!
Doing two tours in one morning, despite being exhausted from trekking the Salkantay, turned into the most perfect Machu Picchu day we could have asked for. Plus it was basically buy-one-get-one-free because of the tour guide’s mistake 😂 And this is why I believe everything happens for a reason ❤️

This weekend, Geoff and I ran the infamous Squam 50 together. If you’ve been here for a while, thank you for following along with training updates. It’s been so special to bring you on this journey to one of the most iconic ultra races in Canada ❤️
Squam is known as one of the hardest 50ks in the country because
⛰️ it has a crazy elevation profile (2500m/8500ft up + 2750m/9000ft down which sounds easier than it is in reality)
🚫 No poles are allowed!
⏳Short 11.5h cutoff
🌲 Extremely technical trails full of roots, rocks, and descents. Quite a bit of scrambling required and some parts weren’t runnable
🌧️ An atmospheric river was forecast all weekend so the trails were slippery. Somehow we lucked out with perfect weather on race day so I can’t complain 😍
On top of that, scoliosis brought me new challenges, and Geoff raced with not one but two sprained ankles.
Life didn’t slow down either. I worked full-time in finance, Geoff in tech, both of us juggling side projects, sports (Geoff with hockey and soccer), bucket list trips, and being there for family across the country. Training wasn’t about having free time… it was about making it fit.
Things that worked for us / we’re grateful for:
🥤 Dialing in race-day nutrition with a sports dietitian was game changer
👟 Finding our perfect trail shoes - the Agility Peak 5
🙌 Support from our friends and Milo. We usually run self-supported, so this felt incredible (and Lenka got us footage we’ve never had before!).
💦 ’s gear and support as always!
Crossing that finish line proved that first ultras don’t need perfect circumstances. The course is hard, the training takes commitment, but it’s possible to fit it alongside real life.
If we (two very normal people) can do this, so can you. We hope this inspires you!
Do you like to run and would you ever run a trail ultra someday? 😍

🇨🇦 We’re in our twenties and grew up in Alberta 🏔️, met in 2015 and got married in 2017. Since then, we’ve lived in Toronto ON🏙️ and now Vancouver BC 🌊. We’re always on the go, so you’ll have to guess where we are whenever we chat!
🐶 Asher came into our lives in 2021 from Texas and he travels almost everywhere with us. We’ve also fostered and are big advocates for dog adoption. According to the dna test Asher’s is a mix of 6 breeds (can you guess?). He might even be part mountain goat based on his superior hiking skills🤪
💖This account is an overflow of our love for helping people. It all started years ago when friends asked for our itineraries - we had so much info to share that we wanted to make it public, to make the outdoors and budget travel more accessible. We grew up doing photography so social media was a natural transition.
🌿Our purpose here is to
- Foster community and inspire everyone to spend time outside
- Encourage diversity in the outdoors space
- Promote sustainability and taking care of planet earth
💼We’re weekend warriors and are well versed in running businesses so this side gig on instagram is super fun!
🏃🏻♀️It’s an honour to have worked with amazing brands because of your support - s/o to the amazing and for having us on their athlete teams 🥹
🌍 We’ve left our hearts in many places, particularly the mountain ranges in Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park, Northern Ecuador, Switzerland, and the South of France (where we went to school to study sports management!)
👯♀️We love making new friends so come say hi!!

A lot of you are telling us you want to start backpacking this summer but don’t know where to start because you feel intimidated by the wilderness, but don’t worry, we’re here to help!😉
After watching the award-winning documentary “500 Days in the Wild”, where was the 1st person to travel 24,000 km across the Trans Canada Trail (the longest in the world!), we felt inspired to share our tips on how to go backcountry hiking🫡(AD)
BACKPACKING STARTER TIPS:
1️⃣Start with smaller hikes to build confidence on your feet:
- Get the free AllTrails app and filter for trails <5km near you, <100m gain, rated easy with 4+ stars
- Try finding trails that are maintained and have cell service
- Find a hiking community (there are plenty on Facebook)
2️⃣Try front country camping and learn survival skills from YouTube or a friend, including:
- Fire starting
- Tent pitching
- Water treatment
- Bear safety
3️⃣Start hiking longer and less-traveled trails in the mountains to increase fitness and gain path finding skills.
- Filter for a trail that’s 10km+ with >200m gain, rated moderate to hard
- Safety tips: Leave your info with a loved one, learn how to read a topo map, and carry a satellite device and paper map
4️⃣Backpack a short overnighter — choose a campsite that takes <3hours to hike to or are <10km one way on Alltrails.
5️⃣Stack new challenges with each adventure - winter backpacking is so fun!
As you spend more time deep in nature, you’ll learn to enjoy the journey on the way to the destination.
👉 Are you going backpacking this summer?
