I mentioned in a previous video that I thought this may be my first five star reading of the year– turns out I was correct! It wasn’t because I think this book is perfect, I actually think star ratings can be pretty reductive. I just loved the process of reading this book. I genuinely had fun. Was it perfect? No! What book is? Did I agree with all of the character’s decisions? No! That’s why reading is interesting.
The setting definitely helped (reading about somewhere you know so intimately is always special), and I’m a sucker for a family epic.
🌲most importantly, a reminder to care for our earth is always appreciated.

I struggled with understanding passive voice and why it can be detrimental to academic writing for a while. A professor explained it to me in a similar way and my writing literally improved over night. I think we’ve all heard we are in the midst of a literacy crisis. I am constantly thinking about what we can do and this idea is something that really stands out to me. Reading to your kids before bed does not just benefit your children in the early years. It follows them up all the way to high school and teachers can tell who was read to/reads. This tip is something I think I learned far too late (about my second year of uni). The word “this” can be FAR too vague for an essay or a paper. We need to include a noun afterward so that it is abundantly clear what it is we are referring to.
Do not: “this proves that isolation versus independence is a key theme in Villette”
Instead: “this example proves that isolation versus independence is a key theme in Villette”
This is such a small change but you’d be surprised by how often my students write too vaguely, thinking I can easily follow along and understand what they mean. One of my biggest tips for visualizing this is hitting command F on your keyboard and searching “this”. That way, all of the hanging “this” will be highlighted for you.
