What if the newly discovered original historical documents and artifacts from one of the most remarkable maritime archives of the Age of Sail – the Prize Papers collection – were brought together with the development of one of the most ambitious new Age of Sail video games?

We believe this is an exciting opportunity to build a bridge between academic research and public history. That is exactly what we aim to explore.

The Prize Papers Project and, together with the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven and the Gamelab Oldenburg, is delighted to announce a new academic collaboration with Capstan Games, a promising indie game studio specializing in the Age of Sail. Capstan is currently developing the critically acclaimed, thoughtfully designed, and historically grounded game “Ahoy”

This partnership brings together historical expertise and game development to explore the Age of Sail in all its complexity, with a focus on the 1780s and one of history’s most contested eras: the American Revolution.

With this collaboration, we are setting sail toward new horizons. We look forward to advancing research and expanding access to the extraordinary Prize Papers archive through video games. Stay tuned!

Amanda Bevan (The National Archives, UK / Prize Papers Project) and Lucas Haasis (German Maritime Museum / Gamelab Oldenburg / Prize Papers expert) serve as advisors and will work alongside Capstan’s research lead John Beiner.

A fleet of c.1780 Royal Navy captain’s hats, enough for a major fleet action, in fact there are enough hats to cover the heads of every line of battle captain at the Battle of the Chesapeake (1781) with hats to spare! Or for every line of battle captain at Trafalgar.

The hats are a mix of the fully laced full dress ‘No.1 Scrapers’, and the unlaced undress hats.
Sewing gold lace to the brim of a c.1780s Royal Navy post-captain’s hat for
Metallic lace requires careful attention and precision, it’s far stiffer and less compliant than worsted. In order to achieve the curve necessary to edge a brim, every stitch is a small gather, creating a slightly frilled look. It’s a very labour intensive process, each hat requiring roughly 1.25m of lace attached by hand.
Ahoy everyone!

We can't quite believe it, but after months and months of planning and weeks of watching the campaign unfold, we are in the final 24 hours of the original 30 day campaign.

Time flies! What a journey it has been. We could never have expected the level of support we've received from you, and we're so incredibly grateful to be given this opportunity.

Your support of Ahoy and what the project stands for is so important to us. History deserves to be told, and the Age of Sail certainly deserves it's time in the spotlight.

Thank you to all of you for your support. ❤️
