"Madinati: Every Story Shapes Our City”: An Interactive Visual Art Exhibition

The Arabic Language and Culture Association of South Australia (ALCASA) warmly invites you to view “Madinati: Every Story Shapes Our City” from 17 April to 13 May at the Minor Works Building Community Centre (during the Centre’s opening hours).

Madinati (My City), is a visual art exhibition about Adelaide and the many cities we carry inside us as migrants from our past life experience. Each migrant brings their own memories and images into the city they now call home. Madinati (My City) shows how a city can be built not only from buildings, but also from imagination, memory and personal experience.

Ahmed ElKhalidi is a visual artist based in Adelaide. Before settling here, he lived in the Middle East and other countries and went through experiences that deeply shaped his perspective. Ahmed’s work—across painting, mixed media and digital collage—explores memory, place, identity and the sense of belonging that comes with living far from home.

Rua Hashlamoun, is a principal architect at Brown Falconer and has lived in Adelaide for over ten years. Her practice focuses on how people experience cities and how identity is shaped through public space.

The artists, Ahmed and Rua, offer a unique opportunity to engage with others in an interactive visual art workshop held on Sunday 26 April (2:00 PM to 4:30 PM). Participants will be invited to explore the exhibition in depth and gain insight into the stories and memories that foster a sense of belonging across our city.

I'm over the moon to show you the cover of my first children's book:
The Lonely Cucumber!

This sweet, silly story follows a lonely cucumber in Layla's lunchbox, feeling overlooked in America compared to toaster tarts, but drawing on Jordanian traditions where cucumbers are cut just right and cherished.

It's about friendship, cultural belonging, healthy eating, and discovering your worth.
Perfect for kids learning to embrace what makes them unique!

Beautifully illustrated by the amazing Elkhalidi, his vibrant art brings the crunch and heart to life.
As a Jordanian-American mom, this book is close to my heart.

Stay tuned for release details, readings, and behind-the-scenes.

What do you think of our lonely (but lovable) cucumber?
Professor Walid Khalidi (1925–2026) was a world renowned Palestinian historian. His book Before Their Diaspora is a landmark collection of nearly 500 rare photographs documenting Palestinian life before 1948, capturing society, culture, and everyday life from the late Ottoman period up to the 1948 Nakba.

I decided to colourize these black & white photographs, maybe just to see if our history could feel a little closer today!
