“We’re doomed the moment we act free.”
Chains disguised as virtues weigh us down, religion, old traumas, and the silent hand of society. Like fragile balloons tied to stones, we rise only to be pulled back, reminded that freedom is a dangerous trespass. Yet in this struggle between the balloon that longs to ascend and the hand that holds the string, lies the fragile beauty of existence: the defiance of trying to fly, even at the risk of being cut down.

I dream of touching the sky, yet I stay grounded for the happiness it brings.

A sculpted balloon painted in the colors of Palestine rises, but only barely. A human face pushes through its fragile skin, mouth open in a cry that trembles between suffocation and survival. It is tethered to a broken hand, fractured yet still clinging, forcing freedom to remain just out of reach.
My art often circles around the longing for liberation, the tension between flight and gravity. I know what it means to ache for freedom, but my ache is a metaphor, a personal battle I can shape into sculpture. For Palestinians, the longing is not symbolic, it is their daily condition, their stolen birthright.
The broken hand embodies that injustice with the cruelty of being held down while the spirit strains upward. It makes me sick to my stomach to know I can sculpt my longing, while they endure the weight of captivity. Yet even in this cry, fragile as a balloon’s skin, there is defiance. A voice that refuses erasure. A reminder that freedom is not a dream, it is an insistence, burning through the fractures, demanding to rise.

•I still don’t know whether this work set me free or held me still.
By sculpting it, did I open a breach? Or fortify what confines me?
Each burnt match carries a weight, perhaps mine, perhaps the one I hoped to release.
Creation did not heal. But it made the shadow visible. And maybe that’s already a kind of light.

Créer The Burnout, c’était comme revivre l’inacceptable.
•My seven The Burnout sculptures were born from a raw, intimate pain… The last seven days of my father’s life before pancreatic cancer took him from us.
Each piece holds a day, a breath, a moment of pain, of resistance, of letting go. As I sculpted, I kept seeing his face, his exhaustion, his strength and his dignity through the collapse.
And in the final piece, I saw the moment I can never forget: his face as his soul left his body in my arms.
Creating The Burnout was like reliving the unbearable. But it was also a way to hold on to him a little longer and to give shape to what love couldn’t save, but art could remember.
