When I embarked on this project I knew that I wanted to make a mini series looking out the windows of my studio and the studios of my close peers, artists that I admire and who are a great support to me, both professionally and personally. studio is just across the corridor from mine. It is the studio, aside from my own, that I probably spend the most time in. Countless lunches, coffee breaks, and daily chats have been shared here. It takes me back to the feeling of being at art school, where conversations about exhibitions and life are interspersed with critique and reflection on our own practices, offering references and suggestions along the way.
What I enjoy about this painting is that it gives a view on to an artist’s process, without revealing everything. Instead of seeing the finished work, or even a painting in progress, we see the piles of photographs that form a part of the editing process. The early stage on the journey to finding the composition that will inspire the finished painting. That is one of the privileges of being in another artist’s studio, you get an insight into the labour that goes in to arriving at a completed work. In the centre of the table is Hannah’s studio diary; a logging of thoughts and ideas, preciously held in a closed notebook. No matter how much of an insight one might get, you can’t dive into the mind of the artist. Some things remain mysterious, as they should.
I’m so grateful that Hannah allowed me to take inspiration for my paintings from her working space. It is a sacred space and my access felt exclusive. I only hope I have done some justice to this special place.

In the present work, ‘Gough road window’ (2026), there is a quiet and easily missed dialogue between Freeman Bentley’s paintings and the twentieth-century works that hang next to it. Sitting beneath the window sill, slightly hidden by brushes, paint, and glue, sit small postcard-sized references of these very works. Tacked to the wall of the room where new works are made, they are ever present friends and inspiration, permeating her colour palette and composition. Freeman Bentley falls within this distinguished lineage, not as its epilogue but its living continuation.

The artist’s studio has long been more than a place of work. It is a theatre of the self; a space where the act of looking turns inward, where the world is examined and reimagined. This exhibition takes that concept as its premise, spanning an entire century, it traces the studio as a living subject; from Picasso’s home-studio of the 1950’s to Anna Freeman Bentley’s East London studio of today.
Exhibited alongside the works of Braque, Dufy, de Chirico, Matisse and Picasso, Anna Freeman Bentley’s paintings of her own studio - and of the studios of fellow painters - ask quietly but insistently what it has meant, and continues to mean, to claim this space as an artist.
