What sounded more like a scene from The Hangover than a routine flight unfolded onboard an AirAsia service from Nha Trang to Bangkok.
A passenger stripped down to his underwear, threatened cabin crew, ran through the cabin, and demanded the aircraft door be opened, forcing an emergency landing at Bangkok Don Mueang. After landing, the man jumped from the aircraft before stairs were in place, injuring his leg, and was arrested on the tarmac.

So why have Sicily’s temples aged better with time?
The island’s drier climate and lower seismic activity helped protect them from erosion and earthquakes. Many were built with durable local limestone and solid engineering. 📍This is Segesta’s unfinished Doric temple, built in the 5th century BC, not by Greeks, but by the Elymians, a native Sicilian people who embraced Greek architecture to assert their power in the region. Unfinished yet majestic, this temple stands untouched by war, empire, or time, and it’s just a short drive or bus ride from Trapani’s city center.

I can't believe the time is nearly here to leave this amazing country that has been my home and haven for over two years. This country is much more than Cancun, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, and other "tourist traps." Mexico was everything I thought it would be and 1000 times more.
Mexico is... Magical, and I encourage everyone who hasn't, to dig deeper into its hidden treasures.
I found my magic in Mérida, in the peaceful state of Yucatan, and it has forever changed my ways and molded me into a person I'm proud of being. I look back at the individual who arrived here, running from hardships the pandemic put in my way, and I barely recognize my former self. I'm so grateful to have landed and been welcomed in such a beautiful, freeing land that fostered transformation fueled by self-love and accompanied by trustworthy new friends I now call my chosen family.
On the 10th of May, I will return to my forefathers' region of Sicily to make my new home in Trapani, and I hope this will become my forever home.
The last time I felt I had a real home, I was 19 years old, and those walls of love departed with my father. My journey thus far has taken me to foreign lands of temporary shelter, but I'm ready to go where I feel I belong, a place my blood and inner voice says is home.
I'm looking forward to creating a new home guarded by safe boundaries and filled with love and acceptance of the person I am today. As I enter this stage of life, I see as part 2, life my way; I can't wait to thrive living the Dolce Vita!

I've traveled to hundreds of destinations around the globe in the years that preceded this period, but none of that taught me the lessons I learned about myself while sitting in one place and focusing on myself and my growth. Now, I look back at those years of movement as beautiful distractions.
I started this new year alone, in my stillness, reflecting on the 365 days spent prior, and while it looked like I didn't accomplish much to the outside world, I achieved the most internally. I learned a valuable lesson during this period: Just like you don't pull a caterpillar from its cocoon before it's ready to become a butterfly, don't rush a person in the middle of their metamorphosis.
We sometimes force social norms on those finding themselves in unconventional ways when we ask questions like, "What are you doing with your life?" "Do you have a job yet?" "When are you going to do that thing you said you were going to?" These queries can lead the person focusing on their inner growth to believe their time spent in this state of little movement is wasted when really, they are making a wise investment. Perhaps this is why people often disappear to places of solitude far away from their friends and family, to drown out the noise of spectators so they can hear their inner guide more clearly.
The Yucatan has been the perfect spot for me to drown out the noise and grow amidst its wonderous energy and natural beauty.
I dedicate this post to my best friend, whom I admire for embarking on her journey of solitude to hear her authentic self. It's a privilege to be your reflection through this ride called life. I love you forever, my dear soulmate, and I am proud of the growth you have seen since moving away from toxic chains.
Yesterday was the day I held my new nationality in my hands. My Italian passport had finally arrived, and it felt surreal.
I've always been Italian, well half at least, but up until recently I felt like a counterfeit. I didn't speak the language, I have never lived in Italy, and I didn't have anything besides my looks and a DNA test to prove I was primarily Italian. Who knew it only took a small maroon booklet to validate what I already knew I was? Humans are funny about these things; we make imaginary lines and give power to small little books that make us belong to those imaginary boundaries. Even so, I'm honored to be officially claimed by Italy, and it feels like compensation for all the insults and comments I endured as a dark complexioned little person growing up in the cotton fields of Mississippi.
In my next post, "Becoming Italian Part 2," I will further explain how my new nationality is a personal victory in overcoming racism.
