Однако прославился он вовсе не благодаря трапу: во время Второй мировой войны он же изобрел спасательный жилет, получивший название «Mae West» (Мэй Уэст) в честь большегрудой актрисы, очень популярной в те времена: военный летчик в таком жилете становился похож на даму с размером явно больше третьего. Интересно, что надувной жилет появился в конце 1920-х годов и придумал его Питер Маркус; однако жилет конструкции Бойля массово применялся в американской армии. Первые надувные трапы начала изготавливать фирма Air Cruisers. Сегодня она называется Zodiac Aero Evacuation Systems и по прежнему выпускает надувные трапы и плоты.
Согласно международным требованиям (сертификация американской FAA и европейской EASA) надувными трапами должен оснащаться любой самолет, у которого пол находится на высоте более 180 сантиметров от уровня земли. Трапы периодически инспектируют, проверяя срабатывание: он должен надуться за 2-10 секунд. Раз в три года трап демонтируется для особой проверки избыточным давлением.
После 15-летнего возраста трапы инспектируют уже раз в год. Примерно к этому возрасту появляются протертости, трещины и другие повреждения.
