are one day mystery road trips that inspire you to try, see and do something new. Iāve always loved the thrill of hitting the road, so I was excited to go on one of their new Minnesota trips. (Donāt worry, no spoilers here.)
When you order a road trip, they send you a package with āBefore You Goā info and 4 separate, sealed envelopes for your 4 surprise stops. Each new destination includes recommendations, maps, travel tips, and fun facts.
I chose āCreatures and Quirksā and started out from my Minneapolis home with my partner. We visited a fun suggested stop along the highway. We chose from a couple suggestions for coffee shops in the town closest to stop one. We loved our coffee shop, and the neighborhood. I want to come back sometime and explore more.
Our first stop really delivered on the Quirks. It was so unusual and something I probably would never have found on my own. Our second stop featured beautiful scenery and awesome creatures. The quirks continued with our third and fourth stops, where we unexpectedly found a classic car show going on. We chose one of the restaurant suggestions and had a memorable dinner.
We had tons of fun the whole trip. Since Iām usually the itinerary planner, it was a delight for me to have it all laid out. And the itinerary was top notch. Recommended.

We started in the fort hospital, hearing about 1840s medicineāwhich had very painful-sounding cures! As we toured other areas, from the stables to the officerās quarters, we learned what life was like at a 19th century frontier outpost.
To see re-enactmentsāsoldiers drilling on horseback and artillery demonstrations, for exampleāvisit during the summer months. Admission is free!

Today's feature: KANSAS ROUTE 66, Cars on the Route.
Cars on the Route is a well-known stop along Route 66 in Galena, Kansas. Cars on the Route celebrates it's connection with the Pixar movie "Cars".
The former Kan-O-Tex service station at the north end of Main Street has been part of Route 66 history since it opened in 1934.
In 2007, the building was purchased and restored by four Galena women who hoped to renew interest in Kansas Route 66.
Cars on the Route sells burgers and other hot sandwiches, snacks, antiques, and memorabilia.

This was my FIRST time in Kansas and the Sunflower State surprised and delighted me. For one thing, it's not all flat (more on that later)!
Our intrepid tour guide Colby Sharples-Terry showed us a number of varied landscapes, historical sites, booming small towns and delicious Kansas foods.
We found our kicks on Kansas Route 66, visited the Little House on the Prairie and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, and so much moreāI'll be sharing with you in future posts.
For now, soak in these views of the prairie. Once, this ecosystem covered the entire central portion of the North American continent, to the tune of 170 million acres.
Today, less than 4% remains, largely in this part of Kansas. As Colby says, it saved itself. The Kansas Flint Hills were too rocky to plow.

Then youāre going to like Crawford County, Kansas.
There are 6 fried chicken houses in one small county that have been keeping hungry Kansans full and happy for 50+ years, making a paradise for fried chicken lovers.
Our group had the family-style dinner at the two oldest restaurants, Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary's. The family mealā3 pieces of fried chicken per person, 3 sides and a huge order of onion ringsāis ordered according to the number of folks in your group. All the servings are generous.
Chicken Annie's is the oldest chicken house, est. 1934. Annie's husband worked in the coal mines. When he was injured, Annie started serving meals in her home to help make ends meet.
That home eventually became a homely restaurant. Itās still in the family, being run by Annie's grandchildren. Her granddaughter Donna stopped to chat with us.
The onion rings were a standout at Chicken Annie's. Never had better. Our sides included German potato salad. German-style potato salad and coleslaw is a thing around these parts. (They have a vinegar-based dressing, rather than a mayo-based one.)
After this feast we staggered over to Chicken Marys, est. 1942. Similarly, after Mary's miner husband was injured, she started serving meals in her home.
At Mary's, they had onion straws rather than rings. Then came out a big plate of fried chicken and our sides, including macaroni cheese and spaghetti (another thing around these parts. It's common as a side dish for fried chicken).
Chicken Mary's also thought we should try a couple other things. They were developing a cornbread biscuit they served with homemade apple butter. Oh, my!
They were hot and delicious and I ate the leftover apple butter with a spoon. They also brought out a big plate of chicken parmesan. Yum.
Did I mention all this deliciousness was also eminently affordable? Youād be more than happy eating a meal at either restaurant. Or try both, like we didātheyāre just a block apart!

Escape the city to a delightful urban green space. Take a walk along the paths or hike through the woodland trails. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds. Leashed dogs are welcome to come along.
Admission is free and fun events are happening year round. I loved the piece I'm pictured with, Ricardo Cat by Niki de Saint Phalle. Also pictured are Laumeier's signature sculpture, The Way by Alexander Liberman, Aurelia Roma by Manuel Neri, Eye by Tony Tasset and Bornibus by Mark di Suvero.
As I found when I visited this spring, great things happen when you!
