We stayed at The Echoland, right in Echoland, Hakuba, one of the most popular areas to base yourself if you want bars, cafés and restaurants on your doorstep.

There are bus stops nearby to reach all the ski resorts but on this it’s important to share that we loved almost everything about Hakuba but buses were infrequent, really full, and it could take a long time each day to get around the valley - defo worth considering hiring a car in this valley.
That said, for under £35 per person per night in peak season, this place was clean, comfy, and perfect for a full-on ski trip where you’re out all day anyway.

Hakuba is huge, it’s actually a whole valley made up of 10 ski resorts, which is one of the reasons it’s an incredibly popular ski area. The snow was amazing everywhere, but getting around the valley was a bit of a pain. Buses were infrequent, there wants enough of them, they were packed, and it took ages to get to most resorts. I would defo consider hiring a car next time.
We stayed in Echoland in a hostel (£140 for a family room of 4), and this area was perfect with all the bars and restaurants nearby but I’d probably stay in Happo next time.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the 10 Hakuba resorts:
Happo One – Biggest & most famous, with long runs and a proper mountain feel.
Tsugaike Kogen – Best for families, plus amazing ungroomed tree runs - loved the all round vibes here.
Goryu – Great variety, especially for intermediate skiers.
Iwatake – Beautiful views and lots of fun cruising terrain.
Cortina – Our favourite ski day. Steep, ungroomed runs and proper mountain terrain.
Norikura – Tiny, quiet, and perfect for a relaxed day.
Happo Banks – Small, fun, and easy to fit into a mixed day.
Kashimayari – Great for families and beginners, super relaxed vibe.
Hakuba 47 – Great freestyle terrain and a lively atmosphere.
Sanosaka – A smaller, quieter option with nice wide runs.
The accommodation can be pretty spennie here so if you want a full tour of where we stayed in Echoland for jsut £35 per night each comment “TOUR” and we’ll make a video. ⛷️🇯🇵

On our first trip to Japan 14 years ago we did all the big sights, but for this visit, I really wanted to find something that felt a bit deeper for us coming here as a family. We ended up booking this Samurai experience through experiences (search - ‘Watch Bugaku (Samurai art) in a historic temple’) with Koshiro Sensei @bugaku and it was honestly such a highlight.
I didn’t realize that being a Samurai was as much about art and discipline as it was about being a warrior. We started with a Bugaku performance, it’s an ancient court dance which was so beautiful and precise. It was a totally different side of the culture than the “touristy” shows you sometimes see.
The boys were absolutely buzzing to get into the full gear! They learned a Kata (the choreographed moves) and got to use real (blunt) swords. It’s funny, the part that fascinated us most was the technique of just putting the sword back in its case. It’s actually called a Saya, and there is so much more to it than you’d think.
It’s just a really lovely, authentic way to spend a few hours. The boys were so engaged and we walked away with some of my favorite photos of the trip. Definitely worth saving for your Tokyo itinerary! 🇯🇵

We just spent 3 nights in Tokyo on our way to the mountains for a family ski trip, and it was the perfect start. It was our second time in the city, but the first with our boys and seeing it through their eyes was magic. Our son Caspar even said Tokyo feels like home!
If you’re planning a family trip, these 5 experiences were an absolute highlights for our boys:
📍 Takeshita Street, Harajuku: The ultimate manga and Kawaii sensory overload! It’s the best spot for unique snacks and shopping experience - even for ours that don’t like shopping!
📍 teamLab Planets (Toyosu): An immersive, barefoot sensory experience where you actually walk through water and gardens. It’s unlike anything else we’ve ever experienced a total 10/10 for all ages.
📍 Samurai Experience: We booked this through experiences. Search for ‘Watch Bugaku (Samurai art) in a historic temple’ with. It was so hands-on and a brilliant way to dive into Japanese culture.
📍 Tsukiji Outer Market: Located in Chuo City, this is the place to let the kids try wagyu skewers, tamagoyaki (sweet omelet), and strawberry mochi while you soak up the atmosphere.
📍 Taito Station & Akihabara: We loved the Shibuya Taito Station for a quick gaming fix, but if your kids are older or true gamers, head to Akihabara (Electric Town) for multi-story buildings filled with nothing but claw machines and retro games!

Here’s the honest breakdown ✈️#
✔️ Checked bag included for each of us (including ski gear)
✔️ We were seated together without paying extra
✔️ Comfortable seats, blankets, pillows & entertainment
✔️ Meals + drinks included (even wine/beer)
✔️ WiFi worked for games (emails/browsing - I couldn’t make it work🤷♀️)
⏱️ 3-hour layover in Beijing — security was slow so we didn’t have loads of chill time, but bags were checked through and no transit visa needed for us.
We flew out of Heathrow and back into Gatwick purely because of the dates we needed, Gatwick was the same price on other dates.
Of course direct flights are easier, but at this price we’d absolutely do it again to travel more as a family.
🔍 We always use Skyscanner or Google Flights (not the airline website). Use month view + play with stopovers to find the best deals.

After skiing Japan 13 years ago as a couple (we actually got engaged in Nozawa Onsen), it has always been our dream to go as a family with our boys but taking our kids skiing here still feels a bit wild 🤍

We have been meaning to share one of these since so many new followers joined us (over 50k since last winter ski season). So here’s a bit about us and why we do what we do.
We’re Hannah & Simon (plus Caspar & Otis 👦🏼👦🏼) - a family who met working a ski season back in 2011, Simon and I bonded instantly over mountains, travel and adventure, and have been chasing those ever since.
When the boys came along, we knew we didn’t want to stop exploring but we also knew travel can be expensive and overwhelming as a family. So we made it our mission to keep adventuring together, finding ways to do more for less, and proving that family trips don’t need to cost the earth.
In 2023 we started sharing our travels online. We knew from the beginning we needed to take this seriously if we wanted to turn it in to a full time business so every night after work, we were creating content, improving our editing skills, and spending hours honing our social accounts, all alongside full-time (self employed) jobs and family life. Two years of consistency later, Adventures of the Wests has become our biggest passion, and something we’re so proud to now call our main focus.
Our drive is simple: we want to inspire other families to adventure more - whether that’s a weekend camping trip close to home, a long-haul adventure, or discovering a budget-friendly ski resort you might never have heard of. We love showing how to make travel affordable, real and doable, while sharing the honest ups and downs of doing it all with kids in tow.

Ok to be fair, we know plenty of Brits people that do ski Serre Chevalier but honestly its so nice to ski somewhere in France that feels like a proper French alpine town, is affordable, not over crowded and such an amazing ski area. This will forever be a ski resort we come back to time and time again. Save this one for later but don’t tell everyone
Ski area - 250km pistes lots of north facing slopes and 80% above 1800m for good snow coverage
Best for - all abilities, great beginner areas from all of the villages and great off piste and challenging slopes for experts too
Price - really afforadable - coffee from 2e, pint of beer from 4e pizzas from X
Where to stay -
Briancon - for great value accommodation
Chantemerle - best for families
Villeneuve - for more nightlife, great value accommodation good for singles and groups
Monetier - best for couples and traditional alpine charm (and spa-ing!)
Closest airports - Grenoble a 2 hour drive and Turin 1.5-2.5 hour drive - more regular transfer buses from Grenoble though

Close to the slopes, all your meals included, all your holiday extras included and you can add great quality guiding and lessons for less than you’d pay elsewhere.
