Classic style Ewe kente woman's cloth dating to around 1930-50, with a pleasing and rather unusual red/white / blue plaid background pattern. As you can see on the detail there are a few marks on this cloth, probably from storage in a humid metal trunk over many years. Price reflects these condition issues on an still attractive cloth. Measurements 6'5 x 4', 196 cm x 122. Price £340/US$475/€420 including FedEx shipping. DM for availability. #africantextiles #interiors #interiordesign #vintagetextiles
Both the sparse use of weft float patterning and the red/blue pinstripe strips mark this Ewe kente woman's cloth as a rare survivor from the C19th. The rich saffron yellow makes a beautiful contrast on alternate strips. I particularly like the way the weaver has echoed the blocks of weft stripes using a different, weft float, technique. There area small group of similar cloths in the British Museum collected during the C19th at the port town of Keta, (then called Quetta by the British). Some patches of colour loss in the yellow, otherwise very good neat condition and a great study piece. Measurements 7'6" x 4', 228 cm x 122 Price £750/US$1050/€900 including FedEx shipping. Taking a quick break from African textiles to admire 's massive and beautiful new book that he kindly dropped off this afternoon.
Fulani weavers in Mali updated their traditional indigo and white checkerboard cloths in the second half of the twentieth century to create dramatic new styles of wedding hanging. On this piece there is an explosion of bright new colours and a careful reworking of the narrow strip format to create bold patterns in a style that was called “tapis.”
Dates from circa 1970s and is in excellent complete condition.

Sometimes the design on a cloth just works so well. A superb Fulani tapis wedding hanging from Mali, circa 1970s, with small float motifs set within white ground of the carefully planned layout. Very rare early style of Ewe kente woman's cloth that alternates two different very narrow 6 cm/ 2 1/2 inch width strips. This rich red coloured cotton purchased from British and German traders was greatly admired by the Ewe in the nineteenth century when this cloth was woven. Importantly this cloth alternates stripes down the length of a strip (technically "warp faced", with stripes across the strip width ("weft faced.") It has been suggested by African textile scholar Dr. Malika Kraamer that the rare combination of these two types of strip in the same cloth was historically a precursor to the later and more familiar kente cloth alternation of warp faced and weft faced sections in the same strip. Dates from circa 1900 and is in excellent complete condition (very unusually for early Ewe textiles.) Measurements 5'8" x 3', 173 cm x 91. Price £1650/US$2250/€1925 including FedEx shipping. Ultra narrow 4 cm width strips alternate a rich red block with a fine check of green, yellow and white across this rare early C20th Ewe kente woman’s cloth to create a regular checkerboard effect. In very good neat condition with two or three well done patched repairs. A superb quality version of the classic hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed Yoruba adire eleko cloth design called Ibadandun or “Ibadan is sweet”. Motifs include various birds including chickens and pigeons, chameleons, drums, cocoa pods, pillars, and combs.
Dates from around the 1960s and is in excellent condition. It has become extremely hard over the past few years to find these beautiful vintage adire cloths in Nigeria. and prices have risen accordingly. From a Canadian private collection assembled circa 1970. Measurement: 6’6″ x 5’7″, 197 cm x 171 cm. Price £1650/US$2250/€1950 including FedEx shipping. DM for availability.

Finely hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed "adire eleko" cloth from the Yoruba speaking southwest of Nigeria, circa 1960s. The characteristic grid patterning offsets the small leaves and squares with some larger, more organic, forms. I particularly like the cute little bug that the artist has drawn on the folded over margin (swipe) as a signature for identifying her work at the communal dye works. The cloth has been reduced from its original width, probably for wear by a child. Otherwise in excellent condition. Measurements 6'7" x 4'4", 201 cm x 132. Price £875/US$1250/€1050 including FedEx shipping. DM for availability.
