Jack is block printing the first block of Starfish in colorway D. This historical design is French, circa 1919-1920. The flowing marine design of Starfish is typical of those mass-marketed in Parisian department stores, beginning around 1910. #adelphipaperhandings. #blockprintedwallpaper #handmade #historical reproduction #artisan
Fancy Sprig, American, probably Boston, circa. Jenn is printing colorway C

This pattern, a rather more elaborate rendition of sprigs, or variations of it, were obviously popular during the late 18th century; we know of at least three versions, most likely printed by different companies. Two use three printed colors, the third with just two.

This pattern was originally commissioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in our colorway A. It is installed in the Lafayette Room at Mount Vernon.

Jack is printing French Coffered in colorway B. Circa

This elegant ceiling paper was found in a store in New Berlin, New York, pasted to the plaster between shelves. No doubt it was a bit of leftover stock used to “fancy up” the premises.

The extremely skilled use of grisaille to suggest light and shadow renders it strikingly three dimensional, a classic attribute of good French papers. It’s large scale and robust proportions coupled with the use of medallions and tiling are typical of the 1820s and 1830s. Intended primarily for use on ceilings, French Coffered is also appropriate for staircase passages and hallways.

Jenn and Michele printing the beautiful Peony Frieze.

This pattern is French, circa 1830s. This striking frieze comes from the “Boy’s Room” of The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson and his wife Sarah. The unusual juxtaposition of blue/green floral elements floating over a deep earth red are indicative of the French Empire style found throughout this Nashville landmark. Unlike our Lion Frieze, also from the Hermitage, no manufacturer’s mark was found. The only identifying mark, “750”, cannot be traced to any known manufacturer of the time.

Orchid and Vine, Austrian circa 1911-1920. Jack is printing the final metallic silver.

About this historical pattern.

Orchid Vine has been identified by the Musée des Arts Decoratif at the Louvre as very likely the work of Dagobert Peche, who dominated the Wiener Werkstätte from 1913 until his death in 1923. Peche is chiefly associated with stylized vegetation patterns, and the elongated lancet-shaped leaves and sinuous curves of Orchid Vine are typical of his “magic flowers,” which are always distant abstractions of their natural predecessors.

Our Philadelphia Harlequin in colorway D featured in House & Garden UK December issue. Interiors by and 📸

This historical pattern is circa 1807. The bold geometric pattern and refined colorway (historical coloorway A)of this harlequin paper is indicative of the American fascination with turn of the century French styles. The grid like organization and neoclassical ornamentation is found in many popular patterns from this period.

Michele printing Sunflowers. One more block after this to complete the pattern, a metallic gold.

French, circa 1930. Adelphi’s Early-Twentieth Century Collection draws on the work and influence of the Wiener Werkstätte in Vienna and the French Moderne movement–later known as Art Deco–two of the most influential design schools of the century. Designers in Vienna and in Paris inspired and influenced a generation of designers throughout Europe and the United States, who created a huge variety of patterns that combine fantastic organic and geometric forms with a vibrant color palette.

Jack is printing Madison Damask in colorway D.

A little history about this pattern. Our colorway A is the historical colorway.

Adelphi Paper Hangings was commissioned to reproduce this pattern for the main parlor at Montpelier, the historic home of President James Madison.
The version printed for Montpelier is flocked, since it is believed that a flocked paper was originally hung in the restored room ( the original Montpelier paper has not been identified). The version offered here is not flocked but reproduces the original colors of the archive document, which is from the Adelphi archive, originally found in a trunk in Richmond, Virginia. Beyond that, it is difficult to determine its origin.

While altering historic patterns is not Adelphi’s customary approach when reproducing historic wallpapers, it was very much a tradition among early wallpaper manufacturers.

Our research has identified a very similar flocked wallpaper in England installed at Temple Newsam, near Leeds, in the mid-18thcentury. Another flocked version was used in 1825 at Lydiard Park, near Wiltshire. Both of these patterns were designed in such a way that the pattern could be hung as a straight match or a half drop. Slightly later, in the 19th century, the French company Zuber modified the pattern further to produce a non-flocked interpretation on a vibrant irisé ground.

With the exuberant splays of stylized pomegranates and plant structure it is understandable why this stunning pattern has continued to be well received in all of its versions.
