encryption: the mathematical process of scrambling info so that only authorized people can read it. It protects your banking info, your messages, and your medical records… everything you don’t want exposed on the open internet.

Encryption exists because the internet is fundamentally hostile. Every bit of data you send passes through servers, routers, and networks you don’t control. Without encryption, anyone intercepting that data could read it.

Encryption turns your readable info into mathematical noise that’s computationally impossible to reverse without the right key.

What confuses you most about encryption?
I posted my weekly planning setup in Obsidian and people immediately started asking for the template. Most productivity systems fail because they assume you have consistent executive function, natural time awareness, and memory that doesn’t require external scaffolding.

What do you love most about HackTheBox?
Most VPN companies want you terrified of the internet so you’ll pay for protection you probably don’t need. Here’s the truth: in 2025, HTTPS encryption is almost everywhere, which means your data is already protected on most websites without a VPN.

Yes, VPNs have legitimate uses (bypassing geo-restrictions, accessing your home network remotely, or getting around censorship in restricted countries/enterprise use cases), but they’re not something you need running 24/7 for basic security. Your ISP can see which sites you visit, but not what you do on them. A VPN just shifts that visibility to the VPN company instead, so you’re really just choosing who to trust with your browsing data.

The biggest problem is ridiculously aggressive marketing and shady owners. VPN companies offer creators high lifetime commissions plus thousands per sponsored video, which creates a massive financial incentive to exaggerate threats and oversell solutions. This is how former spyware and adware companies rebranded themselves as “privacy protectors” and became household names. They spent their way into legitimacy through influencer marketing.

A 2023 study found that over 80% of VPN ads on YouTube contained false or misleading claims. When an industry relies this heavily on affiliate marketing and fear based advertising, that should tell you something about the actual necessity of the product.

Bottom line: VPNs aren’t evil, but they’re WILDLY overhyped. For most people, the security benefits don’t justify the cost or the trust you’re placing in these companies. Use them when you actually need them, not because a YouTuber scared you into thinking your ISP is watching everything you do.

If you do need one, consider privacy focused options like Mullvad, IVPN, or Proton VPN that don’t engage in aggressive affiliate marketing.

People ask why I keep talking about LastPass and ExpressVPN. It’s because most people treat them like harmless tools when they are two of the worst places to trust your information.

LastPass was controlled by the same investors who held the majority stake in Pegasus spyware. Pegasus is one of the most invasive surveillance tools on earth. The fact that these investors also controlled a password manager that stored millions of personal vaults was already concerning. The security inside LastPass made it even worse. They were breached multiple times, hid critical details, and tried to downplay the damage. Vault backups were stolen, some were cracked, and the company quietly buried the story.

ExpressVPN sits in a parallel world. It is part of Kape, a company built by a billionaire from a country I cannot name here. His public history includes fraud cases and involvement in data-driven businesses. Kape began as an adtech operation that relied on user visibility, then pivoted into “privacy” by buying multiple VPN companies. Influencers promote ExpressVPN nonstop because the affiliate payouts are enormous. That level of marketing is not coming from nowhere. When a company spends that much to buy trust, you have to ask what the real value of the data is and who benefits from having access to it.

Both products require deep trust. A password manager holds your entire digital life. A VPN can see everything that passes through it. When companies with ties to intelligence networks or surveillance technology control these tools, the risk is REAL. The pattern is clear, and people deserve to know it.
