Farmers have giant crab robots, or mecha, called ali-mech-sags, that they use to plant and harvest crops. Each year, communities have contests where farmers take their ali-mech-sags and test their skills in harvesting, plowing, and planting.
Waya joins the contest using an Alimagnum, a special kind of ali-mech-sag, that has ties to her family.
I enjoyed Wayang Alimagnum because itโs so new to me. Iโm relatively new to sci-fi as a genre, so I enjoyed that this book features many cool technologies while still remaining deeply Filipino.
There are strong family ties, the tender and emotional moments, the concept of a fiesta, and, of course, the fact that the book is written in Filipino.
Most importantly, I love how the book celebrates Filipino farmers. Agriculture plays a huge role in the national economy, but [agricultural workers]( earn far below the family living wage
With rising oil prices, many farmers are also forced to let their crops rot rather than sell them at a loss.
It costs farmers P18 to P20 to produce a kilo of cabbage, but farmgate prices, or the net price a farmer receives for their produce before other costs, range from P5 to P8, and can be as low as P3 per kilo.
I hope more people read this book, because not only is it entertaining, but it also shows how important farming is in the Philippines, and why we need to innovate, not necessarily on the level of al-mech-sags, and respect our farmers.
