For the last couple of weeks I’ve been back working with the England team and my old mate Andrew Flintoff (who is the head coach). To say he’s running a great tour would be an understatement…..the England Lions have historically gone out to try to win tour games over in Australia by picking the second best available in England.
I was fortunate to captain the England Lions to Australia back in 1996 (under Mike Gatting & David Graveneys leadership) we won every 1st class fixture….
This side is different as it’s so much younger and has its eye on developing future test players…..
The team spirit in this team is phenomenal (considering we have been up against far more experienced opposition) and I can’t remember a more positive England touring party than this one…..
It’s been great to back in the 3 Lions for the first time since being locked up in Sydney during the Ashes and Covid times…..
Grateful for every opportunity I get to coach these days and to be involved in competitive professional sport is a blessing that I will never take for granted…..
While I was in the UK in the summer last year, I was introduced to men’s bereavement charity and met their founder Efran Brynin. We hit it off straight away as we both had some synergy thru loss. He lost his son in Afghanistan……as you all know I have been surrounded by loss most of my life having lost 7 of my Surrey team mates including my own brother
I was asked to speak at their annual fundraiser at The Kia Oval in September as a guest speaker….Efren gave me the easy task of talking about grief but asked me to make it entertaining and light hearted 😂😂😂. With that in mind I decided the only way to be able to achieve this was to basically recount my life story and all the highs and many lows (mainly around grief) that I have endured.

It was great to see how Strongmen support men who have lost loved ones, be that child, siblings, partners, parents, friends and colleagues. I really felt a connection

I’m also very proud to have been asked by Effren to represent Strongmen as an ambassador, I am hoping to help raise awareness and support whilst I’m on my own journey of grief 🙏🏽
Well finally I have taken back control of my Instagram
I was hacked 4 months ago! The guy started picking off my social media….first FB then Instagram and finally when he got to my emails I decided I had to try to stop him.
I was ok without the social media for a bit but then remembered it’s a way I stay in touch with a lot of friends &after a few failed attempts at getting hold of Meta i managed to 🙏🏽
Not having social media made me realise a couple of things….a lot happens in 3 months and damn I waste a lot of time on it….
The thing that has occupied my thoughts more than anything is the loss of my great friend and team mate Graham Thorpe, words can’t express how much pain it has bought up from the past. I will write another post after this dedicated to this…..as I don’t want to diminish the significance and his amazing life in amongst my other nonsense.
In complete contrast to this I was blessed to be asked to do some consultancy coaching for Surrey and help out in any area I could. Well to be honest they are an incredibly well run club with Alec Stewart at the helm and Gareth Batty doing a wonderful job of coaching them. Add Rory Burns great leadership and a very well rounded team and it is easy to see why they’ve won 3 titles on the bounce. I would be surprised if they didn’t male it 4 on the bounce & such is their attention to small detail and discipline I wouldn’t bet against them equaling or bettering the great 1950’s sides effort of 7 in a row. I don’t say that to be arrogant but this is an organisation that is working in complete unity from CEO all the way to the most recent employee. Of course I am not saying it is our right to win as there are a lot of other very good sides out there it is merely a way of acknowledging the professionalism and excellence of the people I’ve mentioned above.
All in all I ended up being in UK for 4 months and during that time I spoke at 45 speaking engagements as well as balancing Coaching commitments with Surrey.
Still nothing compares to coming home tbc

Well the launch is finally here….Beyond the Ropes airs on Channel 7 Plus tomorrow night at 7pm
Our first episode was a fascinating insight into the lives and personalities of 2 amazing boxing personalities…..a man who beat Manny Pacquiao and put Aussie boxing on the world stage and Taylah Robertson ranked number 1 by all but one of the major world belts and the future of female boxing in Australia.
I’m proud to be a part of this show and think it will go from strength to strength as well building up the profiles of some of Australia’s best athletes.
This is what Australia has always needed so the public can get to know the behind the scenes stories of these incredible people.
Well isn’t this a win….Im not saying its like winning the lottery but with x2 teenage boys (who could represent their country in eating) and a daughter who is a carnivore it’s the next best thing to it!!!! The Meat Hub in Molendinar are sponsoring me and my kids for our meat….and trust me that’s a big deal 😂😂😂
Paul (the owner) kindly offered to help us out after we met through my good friends Joel Hall and Cleggy at Rebel FM
When I was asked to put my order in I didn’t realise how much meat we actually consume!!!
All in all we are eating well over 10kgs of meat between us all….a mix between mince, steak, chicken and burgers!!!!
Let me tell you if you like meat I suggest you haven’t lived until you’ve visited this place!!!

Thanks Paul and everyone at The Meat Hub for the help 🙏🏽
The last couple of weeks I’ve spent with the Pakistan cricket team….I was appointed as their batting coach in the weeks preceding their tour of Australia that started on Dec 1st….
It goes without saying that it’s a massive honour for me to be asked to coach a side with a rich history of cricketing excellence…..I actually think it is the most flattering role I have ever been appointed into….
I’m not saying that I value it more than the roles that I have had with Hong Kong, PNG, England or Queensland but I feel this may be the first role that I have been appointed in to where I didn’t have some sort of association with…..albeit I played a lot of cricket with Saqlain Mushtaq, Waqar Younis and Azhar Mahmood who all suggested me for the role…..
My first few weeks has been so enjoyable….I’ve always gotten on well with people from all countries but for some reason I find that have always built close relationships with people from this part of the world….
The thing that strikes me most about this team is how close they are and how humble they are….
In Canberra we had the 2nd floor of the hotel to ourselves and where provided with a team room and all the mod cons that go with 5 star hotel living….
Yet these guys rolled a large matt and a prayer matt out in the corridor and would sit around talking and being present with one another….no phones, no fancy bars…..just old fashioned story telling, being present and enjoying one another’s company….it is so refreshing and has highlighted to me my over reliance on my phone (the irony of this statement as I sit here writing this on my phone 🙄)
It was disappointing to lose the 1st Test match against Australia but I have got to know these guys pretty well and I can tell that they are fighters…..we will improve in Melbourne for Boxing Day….
When I started coaching I didn’t know where it would take me….i had a lot to learn but here I am 7yrs later and I’m kind of just going with it and trying to just enjoy the journey….wherever it ends up taking me 🙏🏽
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to congratulate me….it really is appreciated….even if I am horrible at replying to messages 🙏🏽❤️
