It’s 2016. You’re 25 years old in Greenland, traveling through the mountains with a Sisimiut hunter and his dog team, soaking up fragments of his stories in your scrappy almost-Danish. A week later, you’ll fly from Svalbard to the North Pole, the friendly Russian ice pilots drinking rose-colored tea from glass cups in the cockpit. The North Pole is just sea ice, fractured and fissured, drifting in the current. 13,000 feet under the ice, on the ocean floor, the Russians have planted a titanium flag.

In the fall, you’ll go back to Greenland on a Russian icebreaker, the first tourist ship trying to crush its way through the sea ice around the whole northern coast. It doesn’t work. In the belly of the ship, Russian and Ukrainian sailors sauna together in soft felted hats, old friends laughing in their shared language. There’s a swimming pool down there, a sloshing vault of green-black water, and when you dive under you can feel the vibrations of the sea ice breaking under the hull as if they were part of your body.

So much can change in a decade. So much can change in a day. I’m thinking of Greenland now, that beautiful changing world of land and sea and animals and people deeply, ancestrally, connected to all of it. I dream we can get ourselves out of this. Greenland belongs to itself. 🇬🇱

Last slide: stars over Kangerlussuaq Fjord.

I learned to relax a little more this year and place more trust in my own vision, and despite some slow and challenging parts, the year was one of the best yet. This week Kilauea erupted in Hawai’i, fountaining up to 600 feet and spilling six million cubic meters of lava into Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

I will never forget this sight, the boom and rush of the lava moving like a crimson glacier, and the experience of awe shared with thousands of strangers from around the world, bathed in the volcano’s red light.

Feeling extraordinarily lucky to coincidentally have been on Hawai’i for Thanksgiving, and for once, be truly in the right place at the right time. 🌋

So excited to announce my first in-person photography workshop: Photographing Living Landscapes đź“·

Join me at this February for an immersive winter workshop in the raw and storied landscapes of Montana and Yellowstone. Over four days, we will delve deep into the elemental language of winter light, learning to develop a visual vocabulary for telling stories about the natural world.

Through fieldwork, lectures, critiques, and guided investigation, we will explore how stories can transcend literal documentation into the realms of metaphor, memory, and mythology. A highlight of the workshop will be a wolf-watching expedition in Yellowstone, where we will observe, photograph, and reflect on the character and significance of the wilderness.

Learn more at the link in bio - so looking forward to working together with those who attend. Applications close December 19th!

With long wooly coats and massive horns harking back to the last Ice Age, muskoxen are extraordinarily well-adapted to life in the Arctic. During a dream assignment in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for this summer, a family of grazing muskoxen brought amazing opportunities for close-up photographs - and an insight into the sheer diversity of species that thrive there, from caribou to migratory birds. Which is your favorite?

Some moments in this photographic life are gifts. During a visit to Alaska’s Katmai National Park last summer, this mother brown bear and her cub stayed near our group for hours - grazing on sedge grass, taking naps, and eventually snuggling up together for this view of the glaciated peaks beyond.

While this bear likely felt that our group of humans afforded some protection from large males in the area, it was also an incredible example of the mutual trust that makes brown bear viewing on the Alaska Peninsula so unique. Link in bio to read the full story in about what goes into seeing Katmai’s bears in the wild, and thank you, mother bear, for trusting us with your presence. 🤍

Last fall, I spent a week working alongside on a story about the far-reaching implications of climate change in the Polar Regions. The story is out today - and this image of mine from Svalbard made the cover!

Thank you to for trusting me with this assignment, for the companionship and incredible reporting skills, and to all the people in Nome and Unalakleet who trusted us with their stories. The story is online now (link in bio) and the print issue hit newsstands last Friday. More photos soon ✨
