Ski trips with kids can be a lot of work and logistics. The gear list can feel very overwhelming, so let’s break it down!
Ski trips where you go 1x per year are also different than if you plan to do repeated trips. We are repeaters, so this is coming from that mindset. If you only plan to do 1 trip a year or are just starting, you may consider renting instead.
If your kids are skiing all day, they don’t need a ton of regular clothes too. They can repeat their evening/dinner outfit a few times. Many times we just go to dinner while they are still in ski gear.
If your hotel has a pool, make sure to bring your bathing suits too.
Where to Shop:
If you live in a mountain town, check your local thrift shops, ski swaps, and shop sales (especially end of season).If you don’t, try online like Poshmark and friends and family for hand me downs.
One place we liked to check for deals in Germany/Austria is Hervis. They have decent gear for more affordable prices.
If budget is not a consideration: Globetrotter, Bründl, and Sport Conrad are great.
This is one of my favorite ways to spend a winter day.
Here’s my experience on what you can expect:
- purchase a day spa package that will give you access to the hotel spa when you’re not staying as a guest
- the package usually includes a bathrobe, tote bag, locker, access to pools and saunas
- you can typically add on breakfast and a massage or beauty treatment for an extra cost
- expect the saunas to be textile free (nude, no bathing suits)
- reserve in advance during busy times as they can sometimes book up if they are smaller
- read the fine print on what is included in your package and check reviews online first

This is year 5 of creating and sharing this list of expats on IG that you need to follow!
My goals when starting this idea 5 years ago were to:
1. Make it easier for other expats to find each other on here. It’s so nice having people who just “get” the ups and downs of this life.
2. Create a resource of “experts” for people who love to travel. The expat network make great people you can reach out to when you’re planning your own travels to a destination. The advice they can give you is different than what you would get from someone who has visited for only a few days.
How the list works:
Expats, please read through all the slides for all the info and guidelines. Fill out my form (linked in my profile). If you do not submit information there, you won’t get added. I need the info in one place. If you have trouble with the form, please try on a different device-that seems to be helping. I will close the submission form at the end of the day January 14. No submissions after that because then this project just drags on forever.
I will tag and share everyone in my stories, categorized by country of residence. It will get saved as a highlight on my profile as well. I’ll also add everyone to a blog post for referencing in one place without tapping through a bunch of stories.

❄️ Staying at hotels with comfortable rooms and other amenities
I’ve found that the Val Gardena tourism office and the Kaprun/Zell am See tourism office did an excellent job of highlighting other activities in the area besides skiing. I also know there is tons to do in the Garmisch area for non-skiers as well.
In the Kaprun/Zell area you can use all the public transportation for FREE with the mobility card given to you by the hotel (confirm this with your chosen hotel because I’m not sure if they all do it). I was able to take the train all the way to Salzburg and back without paying an extra penny!
And the Alps definitely know how to do a wellness hotel, it’s very much part of the culture and they are easy to find. Most of them offer a day spa package you can take advantage of, even if you’re not staying there.
So don’t worry about me, I’m making the most out of these ski trips!

Christmas markets are winding down this year but it doesn’t mean you can’t start planning for next year!

You can take a torchlit hike through the iconic Partnachklamm, and you can only do it in the winter from December - March.
The Partnachklamm is a must visit in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Even though I’d hiked it many times during the day, seeing it at night was special. If you can time this to follow a period of heavy snow and cold, you’ll be treated with seeing it covered in huge icicles and ice walls. It will be like walking through Elsa’s ice palace-such a cool thing to do on a winter trip.
We booked our tour through the Klammhaus and made a whole night out of it. Our tour with the Klammhaus included a pre-hike aperitif (non-alcoholic also available) and we finished our hike back at the restaurant with a special “hat grill” dinner (at an extra cost).
I did this with a group of friends, but kids 5-12 can also do the tour (though torches may not be given to those ages).
You can also book just the tour without the drinks and dinner with the gapa website. Das Graseck also offers torchlit tours with dinner services after.
