His card went on to say many other sweet things, but those few sentences hit me hard. Tears streamed down my face in the airport parking lot while I read it, because I had already been carrying so much guilt for being on a work trip and almost missing Mother’s Day.
But in that moment, I realized something important.
Our little people are always watching us. They are learning how to live, love, work, care for themselves, and move through the world by watching our example.
Taking care of my body isn’t selfish. Pursuing my dreams isn’t selfish. Building a life that feels aligned and fulfilling isn’t selfish. It’s showing my children what strength, discipline, passion, and self-worth look like.
So instead of feeling guilty for taking care of myself and working hard, I can finally see it for what it really is: another way of taking care of them.
If I could encourage you to do anything, it would be this: live your life as the best example possible. Find your true self. Live your true life. Show your children that filling your own cup matters too, because people who are constantly running on empty can’t fully pour into others.
Maybe the greatest thing we can give our children isn’t perfection. Maybe it’s showing them what a healthy, fulfilled, fully alive human looks like.
