"In rural Maharashtra, Praan Pratishthana is a sacred ritual that brings a stone idol to life—honored, worshipped, and treated as divine. But the hands that carve this god are denied the dignity of being human.
An old man and a young boy from a marginalized community toil under the harsh sun to sculpt the idol for the village temple. When the ceremony arrives, they follow from a distance, hoping for recognition—or at least a meal. Instead, they are made to sit apart, humiliated, and forced to eat off the ground, treated worse than the animals that are fed in the name of kindness.
This is a story of quiet suffering and brutal irony—where a stone is given more respect than the people who shaped it, and humanity is measured by caste, not compassion."

"Stone More Than a Stone and A Man Less Than a Man in Rural Maharashtra, “Praan Pratishthana” is a ritual of consecrating an idol- a vessel for the spirit of God in a temple. It comprises of a ceremony that includes prayers for universal well-being and peace, a procession that gives the community an excuse to assemble and celebrate, and an offering of food to cows: a mark of the community’s commitment to kindness. This kindness, however, comes with its terms and conditions and doesn’t extend to the very person who had carved the holy idol from nothing but stone.
An old man and a little boy, belonging to an inferior section of the society, spend all their days working in the summer heat to finish up carving a stone into an idol before the village's annual Praan Pratishtha ceremony. Unknown of the fact whether they will be rewarded for their efforts, the old man successfully finishes the carving in time giving it his blood, sweat, and everything in between. In the hope of gaining something in return for his skills, effort, and time they follow the mass (belonging to a superior section of the society) from the outskirts of the village to the Temple where the consecration takes place. Whilst the entire
ceremony, the old man and the little boy sit waiting in the burning sun hoping to get at least some decent food in exchange for their efforts. In the account of the community’s commitment to kindness, i.e., offering food to cows, the innocent little boy Highers hopes to receive at least one good meal but little does he
know, they would be expected to eat off the ground and treated worse than any animal.
In this little story of an old man and a little boy, we understand the double standards of the society and the struggles of a rather neglected section who
experience humiliation on a day-to-day basis. We get to see the hypocrisy of the a society where a stone is treated with more humanity than humans themselves.
Where a group of people is oppressed, based on their caste, religion and are systemically forced to live a life worse than animals. Where they stand way lower
than a stone."

The short film ‘Pranpratistha’ has been nominated for the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the Indian Panorama non-feature category. This is a significant achievement for the Film. I am very grateful for the recognition it has received at respected festivals. The film’s impact is shown through the awards and nominations it has earned. Many international film critics, directors, writers, and producers have praised its craftsmanship. The story focuses on an elderly idol maker and a young boy who work together to create an idol for a temple in a drought-hit village. The film thoughtfully addresses cultural, social, and political issues in rural areas. The director and cinematographer use visual storytelling with minimal dialogue to capture the essence of the narrative. ‘Pranpratistha’ was written and directed by Pankaj Sonwane.
