Thank you to everyone – all 250 of you! – who joined us today to celebrate the launch of “Refashioning Bill Gibb for the 21st Century”! It was a great way to honour the legacy of one of Aberdeenshire’s finest. With many thanks to all of our speakers, the Gibb family for their support and Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums for hosting us in the wonderful Cowdray Hall where Gibb staged a retrospective of his work in 1977 – one of many full circle moments today! 140 years of is on display til 12th April and free to visit! 🧡

'Marking 140 years of Gray’s School of Art, this major exhibition reflects on the evolution of studio practice, teaching, and artistic relationships across generations.

Using the School’s 1966 relocation from Schoolhill to Garthdee as a lens, the exhibition reflects on Gray’s evolving identity, from its 19th-century roots in the Mechanics’ Institute, through post-war reform, to its role in today’s creative ecology.

Exploring shifts in studio practice, teaching and cultural production, the exhibition and associated programme of events offer a space for speculation and provocation, sparking new conversations about the role of art schools now and in the future.

Discover works by important artist-educators such as James Cowie, Henderson Blyth, Sylvia Wishart, Frances Walker, Joyce Cairns, Fred Stiven and Ainslie Yule, alongside contributions that correspond with these works by current staff and alumni including David Blyth, Andrew Cranston, Callum Innes and Tako Taal. Artworks and archival material are drawn from the collections of Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums, RGU Art & Heritage Collections, the Royal Scottish Academy and from private lenders.'

While you stay cosy, take a moment to enjoy Afterglow, 1912 by Joseph Farquharson. Farquharson, whose family had lived on the Finzean estate on Deeside since the sixteenth century, was famed for his winter scenes. Painted in the Forest of Birse, Afterglow captures the pink glow of an evening sky and bluish shadows on snow-covered woodland. As twilight falls, rabbits venture out, unaware of the artist’s presence. 🐇

👉 Afterglow is currently on display in Gallery 9: Balmoral Phenomenon at Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Aberdeen… we need to talk about influencers.
Because while the internet is loud, Gray’s School of Art has quietly shaped this city for 140 years, long before hashtags, trends, and algorithms.

Today I got a first look at Never Make a Head Bigger Than a Melon, the new exhibition celebrating generations of Aberdeen artists… painters, sculptors, makers and storytellers who walked the studios at Gray’s and passed the baton from one era to the next.

You’ll find:
The statue of John Gray, a gift from a former student
Andrew Cranston’s work, flown in from New York
Exhibition leaflets printed on seed paper (yes really) that will be planted on campus after the show. 140 years of creativity, identity, and the fight to define what an art school is

Aberdeen’s artistry isn’t just online,it’s in the hands, hearts and histories of the people who’ve been creating long before the rest of us picked up a phone.

Gray’s School of Art: 140 Years, on now at Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Go see it. Celebrate it. Share it.
