New! Collected Works: Volume 3 2010–2020. Caruso St John, 2026
£85

Between 2010 and 2020, Caruso St John expanded its reputation for sensitive and characterful architecture through a remarkable range of projects. Major buildings in the heart of Swiss, German, and Belgian cities explored the role urban landmarks can play in the present day, while smaller domestic projects provided the opportunity for experiments in restoration, materials, and colour. Transforming buildings for reuse – from beloved public institutions to long-abandoned industrial sites – became a focal point for the practice as it sought to emphasise its work with the existing rather than contribute to the escalating production of new construction. Their designs for memorials, exhibitions, and museums further developed this engagement with memory and an aliveness to the past.

Published by our friends at MACK, the third volume of Caruso St John’s acclaimed Collected Works series covers this prolific period via a sequence of resonant themes. Projects are presented with extensive drawings, photography, and new commentaries, interleaved with competition entries, contemporary reviews, and material that inspired and informed the architects, including texts by Elizabeth Wilson and Grace Ndiritu and references from Alberti to Roger Diener and Pissarro to the Bechers. As a retrospective, the book is reflective, allusive, and critical, engaging with urgent contemporary questions while offering a close encounter with the mature work of one of the world’s most significant architecture practices.

All three volumes are available at the AA Bookshop and 🔗

Some of the largest architecture firms have effectively become war corporations. At the same time as designing Olympic parks and world-famous buildings, they have constructed military bases, maintained weaponry, and trained personnel for wars in which hundreds of thousands of people have been killed. In some conflicts, the same firms have been contracted from invasion to reconstruction, including facilitating military attacks, rebuilding war-damaged infrastructure, and establishing new governments. Architecture for Warfare tells the story of a form of multidisciplinary corporation that employs architects skilled in designing structures alongside former military personnel with experience handling live-fire weapons. It highlights the tensions and contradictions within these architecture-led firms that claim to make the world a better place. The book combines personal narrative with detailed research to reveal unsettling relations between design, planning, and armed conflict. Published by JOVIS Verlag.

Join us for the first book launch of the year, where we’ll be celebrating the publication of Theorising Interior Architecture and Design, edited by Carola Ebert.

🗓️ Wednesday 21 January, 6–8pm
🗣️ Talk begins at 6.15pm
📓 Launch price £29.99 (RRP £39.99)
🏛️ AA Bookshop, 33 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3EE

Theorising Interior Architecture and Design. Identity, Practices, Education, and Beyond looks at interior architecture and design from a contemporary and international perspective. The book takes theory building to be one of the most important activities for a discipline. It explores the interior discipline’s theoretical dimension, and discusses pedagogical, professional, and creative practices across the globe. Why is the identity of interiors a complex issue, and how does this relate to theoretical concepts like surface, interior/exterior, or time? How can we think about the different roles of interior education, creative and professional practice? What lies beyond interiors’ boundaries?

The chapter in focus, “Intrinsically Interior. Intricacy Not Size” by Nerma Cridge and Sophie Ungerer, identifies pivoting as essential to the discipline itself and discusses it through a series of selected case studies where physical and literal overlap with the urban, collective and digital realm.

We are delighted to welcome Carola Ebert, Sophie Ungerer and Nerma Cridge to the Architectural Association Bookshop to celebrate the launch of their new publication. The evening will include drinks and a discussion with the editor and both chapter authors.

Published by Routledge.

New from AA Publications — Seeding Change: Visionary Timber Architecture at Hooke Park, 1981–2001, 2025
eds. Kate Davies & Anna Lisa Reynolds
£30

Hooke Park in west Dorset is a home to a nexus of progressive approaches to forestry, architecture, engineering and education. Now under the stewardship of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, this woodland campus was established by John Makepeace and the Parnham Trust in the early 1980s to propose new forms of timber construction using locally sourced roundwood. Their project resulted in three pioneering buildings – the Prototype House, the Workshop and Westminster Lodge – designed by Ahrends, Burton and Koralek, Frei Otto, Edward Cullinan Architects and Buro Happold.

Seeding Change draws on a rich archive of photographs, drawings and documents to tell the stories of these structures, tracing the evolution of their material-led and research-driven approach to design, grounded in a living landscape. By examining how three such radical experiments in roundwood were made real through collaborations between foresters, engineers and architects, the book offers both a detailed case study and an invitation to reimagine how we build.

With contributions from John Makepeace, Andy Goldsworthy, Ingrid Schroder, Carlos Peters, Zachary Mollica, Finbar Charleson, Jack Cardno, Wyatt Armstrong, and Dmitrii Federov.

Published by AA Publications and designed by Caspar Bailey.
