The crown and the prince (part-5): If I am asked who shaped the modern identity of Rampur, it would undoubtedly be Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan. He was raised in the elite crowd of Delhi and learnt the machinery of royal politics from a very young age. His father Nawab Sayeed was chosen as the new Nawab after the death if his uncle in 1840, which brought him back to Rampur.
.
He was crowned the new Nawab in 1855 but it was then he faced the biggest challenge any Nawab ever faced—the mutiny of 1857. His stance during the revolt had sparked debates till today, but he was somehow able to save his kingdom from ruin.
.
This decision had shaped Rampuri politics till today. It estimates the common man’s position at the disdain towards Nawabi heritage, while also excluding an upper class from its consequences.
.
Nawab Yusuf had learnt poetry from the masters and went on to write his own Diwan called Diwan-e-Nazim which was edited by Ghalib himself.

Why We Must Visit the Past: There is a peculiar difference between knowing a monument and experiencing it. A photograph can capture its arches, its domes, its ornamentation, and even its decay. Yet it cannot convey scale, silence, or the feeling of standing within a space shaped by centuries of human lives.

I have spent years studying old photographs, maps, and documents of Rampur and other forgotten towns. Through them, I formed images in my mind of palaces, gateways, mosques, and gardens. But every time I finally stood before one of these monuments, my perspective changed. Spaces that seemed modest in photographs suddenly felt monumental. Courtyards appeared larger, passages narrower, and distances shorter or longer than I had imagined. The monument ceased to be an image and became a place.

Perhaps that is why I often struggle to convince people to travel beyond the famous tourist circuits and visit these smaller cities. Many see only crumbling walls and neglected buildings. I see stories waiting to be heard.

These monuments deserve more than our curiosity; they deserve our presence. Restoration begins not with stone and mortar, but with appreciation. There is still a long road ahead before many of these structures receive the care they need, but every visitor is a step toward ensuring they are not forgotten.

Apparels of Askari Begum: Part-2: In this 1938 portrait, Askari Begum, later honoured with the title Rafat Zamani Begum, is attired in a sari of dark silk accented by a luminous zari border that catches the light with her demanding demeanour.
.
A striking silver sardozi on silk blouse emerges outwards with delicate white blossoms against a dark ground. The ensemble balances her modern and traditional personality into one thoughtful outfit.

The look is completed with an exquisite set of ruby and diamond jewellery. Long chandelier earrings frame her face, while matching bracelets and rings lend flashes of crimson brilliance. Her carefully waved hair, styled close to the head in the fashion of the era, complements the outfit.

Together, the sari, jewellery, and coiffure present a portrait of aristocratic grace and an enduring example of the refined aesthetic cultivated in Rampur solely because of her own personal style.
This advise by has stayed with me in the past few days. We can learn so much from people of a city than just consuming the monuments.

4 years ago, the universe asked me a question, and finding its answer led me onto a journey of self-reflection and discovery into the depths of history and my city. I was (and am still) writing a book on fiction wherein one of the protagonist comes to Rampur to meet a historical character. By that time, besides some superficial understanding and few names, I knew nothing about my hometown. Today, I have reached upon a very unexpected milestone on this home bound journey.
.
I’ve been told that this had made waves in the local discussions and I’m glad people from Rampur and the entire region are finally waking up from this age old slumber.
.
They say that you can be the change you want to see, and I never thought that the first step towards this would be taken by me.
.
Miles to go and I hope I meet more interesting and enthusiastic people that I’d met in the last two days. Thank you everyone who supported and helped me and are continuing to do so!

Abhee manzile aur bhee hain!
My first column in an international magazine. 'Bukhara-e-Hind' was the name given to Rampur during Nawab Faizullah's reign as it emerged as a centre of oriental and islamic studies. However it's syncretic past is forgotten and I believe it needs serious rekindling. Inshallah this year my book on Rampuri history, belongingness and legacy would be out, where I have tried to give a direction on how to search for space and identity, which every small town kid like me, had struggled in the past.

.
Miles to go on this!

Sometimes I anticipate what I'm losing on while being a doctor. There's a certain level of vulnerability in these lines so bear with me if you have read this far.
.
.
This feeling of doing something bigger than yourself doesn't hit when you are actually doing it. It seems to me like a chore. A repeatedly mundane and exhausting and sweaty ordeal at the end of which there is either a thankless discharge or a #fomo of a party you didn't attend because of it.
.
.
But then while I stood there cannulating and giving surfactant to this 33 weeker last night I was reminded of a similar event which happened to me 6 months back. Sometime in my second year during my NICU I came across a 31 weeker and that baby was the first surfactant I ever put. Six months back a kid walked in my OPD and he was a 3 year old boy. His father identified me working in NICU and remember me telling him about his baby and getting a family meeting sign done from him, for which he was hesitant. He told me that today his kid is 3 years old. He sings and dances well so they are going to make him learn art and dance very soon. This was the same baby I had put surfactant in 2018. The very first!
.
.
After all that had been said and done. That stayed with me. The vulnerability paves way to comfort.
