Bringing this new work to Art Basel was exciting and daunting in equal measure, as we often only experience the work for the first time when we install it.

The work has two sides. On one side, mist-filled bubbles form and descend its undulating surface. On the other, the mechanisms slowly breathe, making the phenomenon. It's the first time we've exposed the technology as part of the experience, and passing back and forth between the two sides, you really see that threshold between the metaphysical and the material. And between the hardware and the ephemeral moment.

There is this idea of something slipping from the wires and the chips into the mist-filled bubbles, slipping into existence and then out of existence as they burst and dissolve. But what is it that is slipping between these states? It seems to be at the heart of questions of life itself. What slips into the physical matter with our existence, and what slips out when we cease?

We used the blue light to make the aluminium sculpture disappear into the space, and the space itself recede into the air. What we had not expected was for the white bubbles rising out from its blue surface to stir a memory: the time we visited Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, painted in the early 1300s, the colour still as fresh as the day it was painted over 700 years ago. Stars set against a vault of brilliant ultramarine, lapis lazuli drawn out of the mountains of Afghanistan and ground into the sky.

Thank you for commissioning this and your commitment and support of the arts, and thank you for hosting us and an incredible week.

The Moon Underwater (2025) created for an exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The bubbles appear almost like miniature moons or luminous celestial bodies. Their reflections on the water create the illusion of moons floating both above and below the surface. The title refers to a long standing Japanese aesthetic tradition of appreciating the moon’s reflection in water, sometimes considered more beautiful than looking directly at the moon itself.

The large tapestry is inspired by the zebra mussel once native to the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan, which has lost over 90% of its volume through decades of environmental devastation. The shellfish disappeared alongside the collapse of its ecosystem.

We had wanted to create a bubble dress for many years, as an extension of our immersive installations into something wearable and alive, so we were thrilled to have the opportunity to realise this for the Met Gala this year with

From the beginning, the process involved constant experimentation, testing different techniques and technologies through trial and error. The challenge was how to compress our immersive installations into a wearable garment. What appears simple was in reality incredibly difficult to achieve: maintaining a continuous and steady flow of bubbles, controlling their size so they matched the proportions of the glass bubbles, and engineering the system so the machine could operate silently and autonomously.

For us, it was never just about creating the technology for the dress, but about creating a moment; fleeting and suspended between presence and disappearance.

On the day of the Met Gala, we went to meet at The Carlyle, and seeing how excited she was about the dress was so delightful. We spoke together about the piece, and with her background in science she immediately understood what the dress represented. She shared with us her experience as an athlete, the sensation of weightlessness while suspended in the air, and how deeply she connected with the work. We felt that we could not have wished for a more perfect person to wear this dress.

We waited in the car outside the hotel entrance to pick her up, and seeing Eileen emerge from The Carlyle was truly magical. The crowds cheering and responding so warmly to the dress was deeply moving. Inside the car, we made final calibrations to the piece, moments before arrival.

When we reached the Met, we wished Eileen luck as she stepped onto the red carpet. It was a moment we will never forget🙏

Opening today at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, A.A.Murakami present new work within the Uzbekistan National Pavilion, ‘The Aural Sea’

Set within a broader exploration of myth and environmental transformation, their contribution brings their practice of ‘ephemeral tech’ into dialogue with the conditions of the Aral Sea.

Formed by Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves, the duo continue their enquiry into how technology can operate within physical law, shaping environments through airflow, pressure, temperature, and time.
Within ‘The Aural Sea’, this approach expands into a wider question of how landscapes are sensed, remembered, and reimagined. A way of working that treats experience as something constructed through attention, and carried forward through the body.

On view from 9 May - 22 November 2026.

Part 2 of How we went from breakfast in Tokyo to Marfa,Texas.

We started with a digital code—built from the natural patterns on Asari clam shells. But the beauty wasn’t just in the code itself—it was in how it took form, like the organic texture of a shell.

These abstract patterns reminded us of woven rugs. So, we built an automated knitting machine—one that could translate the code into textiles.

Compact enough to travel, we packed it into a flight case and took it to Marfa, Texas. Inside a barn in the desert, the installation came to life.

A custom digital interface with analogue dials let us simulate environmental forces—acidity, temperature—just as nature shapes a shell.

Turn the knob, press knit, and the machine jumps into action. Pattern after pattern, each one unique, never repeating.

After days of knitting, we laid the textiles across the desert, watching them stretch into the landscape. Like the shells that inspired them, they will keep growing—each pattern distinct, never to exist again.
